Women's choice: An ethical perspective

"Women seriously considering abortion don’t really ‘want’ one but feel like they ‘need’ one. They are so overwhelmed with the multiple extenuating circumstances associated with the pregnancy that they feel an extreme sense of urgency to solve the dilemma (flight or fight). Supporting a woman’s autonomy through meaningful and customized solutions that address the issues driving her sense of entrapment reflects true empathy and responsible community service. Without tangible information and support, good will and high ideals degenerate into a tool for propagating a political agenda and the further exploitation of vulnerable women." Agree? Disagree? Former Pro-Choice Atheist Reflects on Sex, Abortion and Anger

In every society, there are two critical lists: acceptable conditions for having a baby, and acceptable conditions for having sex. From time immemorial, the one thing that almost every society had in common is that their two lists matched up. It was only with the widespread acceptance of contraception in the middle of the 20th century, creating an upheaval in the public psyche in which sex and babies no longer went hand-in-hand, that the two lists began to diverge. And now, in 21st-century America, they look something like this:

Conditions under which it is acceptable to have sex:
• If you're in a stable relationship
• If you feel emotionally ready
• If you're free of sexually transmitted diseases
• If you have access to contraception

Conditions under which it is acceptable to have a baby:
• If you can afford it
• If you've finished your education
• If you feel emotionally ready to parent a child
• If your partner would make a good parent
• If you're ready for all the lifestyle changes that would be involved with parenthood

As long as those two lists do not match, we will live in a culture where abortion is common and where women are at war with their own bodies. LifeSiteNews

“Pro-Choice Cover-up” Must End

Congressman Chris Smith took his colleagues and the Obama Administration to task on the floor of the U.S. House on the eve of the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, chastising them for promoting the abortion agenda when there is so much evidence for the harmful effects of abortion on women and their unborn children. Smith described the pro-life movement as “the greatest human rights struggle on earth” and asked members of Congress, “How long will we permit the pro-choice cover-up and bogus safety claims to misinform, especially in light of the reams of evidence documenting serious injury to women who abort?” He dismissed the notion of “safe” abortion as “nonsense. Women deserve better. They, at the very least, deserve the truth." LifeSiteNews

Azeri Alarm at Abortion of Female Foetuses

Activists in Azerbaijan say women pregnant with girls are being forced to undergo abortions or even being abandoned by their husbands because their families are determined to have male children. The situation has got so serious that parliament is discussing banning abortions after the sex of the child is known to prevent the gender proportions in the population becoming dangerously unbalanced. Forced abortions are preventable: Working to protect the rights of women

It would only take a few minutes for abortion counselors to inquire of a pregnant woman: "Is someone else encouraging you to have this abortion? Do you want this abortion or are you doing it at the request of someone else? Are you feeling pressured to have this abortion by any other person? Are you feeling forced to abort because of violence, fear, threats or pressure? Do you feel any attachment to this pregnancy or any desire to keep it?"

These questions could prevent countless unwanted abortions. These questions can lead to referrals for family and intervention counseling, or shelters from abuse, which could help thousands of women avoid unwanted abortions. These questions can help save lives. But today, abortion providers are free to ignore these questions. And sadly, to save time during patient intake, most do. The UnChoice

Virginia Legislature Defeats Bill Attacking Pregnancy Centers

The Virginia state legislature wasted little time rejecting bills sponsored by abortion advocates attacking pregnancy centers that provide pregnant women with help and support. The bills (SB 188 and HB 452) would have required the centers to post signs saying they don't do abortions and that would have given women the impression the centers are not legitimate, professional or that they give inaccurate medical advice. However, both the House and Senate versions of this legislation were killed in subcommittee late Tuesday. LifeNews

How Do You Know If Your Organization Is Getting Better?

Jim Harden of CompassCare raises more excellent questions on his LinkedIn discussion group: "Do you as leaders have a way that you consistently improve your Pregnancy Center's ability to reach more women seriously considering abortion--the really tough cases? What about a way to know that you are improving they way you serve those women such that more of those women go on to have their babies. Do you have weekly staff meetings? Do you have annual strategic planning days? Are your staff and volunteers involved in the process?

"If you have a technique that seems to have been working in terms of helping your organizations continuously improve would you be willing to share it with the group? Also, if you have questions about how to do this type of thing better would you be willing to ask those questions?"

US babies mysteriously shrinking

Birthweights in the US are falling but no one knows why, according to a study of 36.8 million infants born between 1990 and 2005. It can't be accounted for by an increase in caesarean sections or induced labours, which shorten gestation. What's more, women in the US now smoke less and gain more weight during pregnancy, which should make babies heavier. Unmeasured factors, such as diet or exercise, could explain why babies are being born lighter. NewScientist

New angle on abortion and slavery

When Chinese officials created the country's one-child-per-couple policy in 1978, they intended to contain the country's burgeoning population for the sake of economic growth, national security and environmental preservation. But Chinese boys now outnumber Chinese girls by the millions, and the impact of the lopsided sex imbalance is starting to spill beyond China's borders. This phenomenon of "missing girls" has turned China into "a giant magnet" for human traffickers, who lure or kidnap women and sell them — even multiple times — into forced marriages or the commercial sex trade. Woman Dies After Abortion at NY Clinic

A New York woman has apparently died as a result of a failed abortion done at the A-1 Women's Care abortion center located in Queens. WPIX-TV reported a woman in her 30s undergoing heavy bleeding was rushed to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. An investigation into the failed abortion is ongoing; one question officials are examining is whether the center was licensed to do abortions. WINS indicated the abortion practitioner severed an artery during the abortion procedure.

The NY state department of health lists A1 Medicine as a facility for plastic surgery. Other media reports indicate the second-floor office specializes in plastic surgery, laser wrinkle surgery, skin depigmentation, and liposuction, but does abortions as well. The clinic is reportedly still taking appointments for abortions. LifeNews; Additional information; NY Daily News

Teen pregnancy, abortion rates rise

The teen pregnancy rate in the USA rose 3% in 2006, the first increase in more than a decade, according to data out today. The data also show higher rates of births and abortions among girls 15-19. The numbers, calculated by the Guttmacher Institute, show a clear reversal from the downward trend that began in the 1990s. About 7% of teen girls got pregnant in 2006, a rate of 71.5 pregnancies per 1,000 teens. That's up slightly from 69.5 in 2005, Guttmacher says. In 1990, when rates peaked, about 12% got pregnant. Washington State Abortion Advocates Attack Pregnancy Centers

A Washington legislative committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on a bill attacking pregnancy centers. The legislation would apply the Consumer Protection Act to religious non-profit organization and violate PCC's rights of freedom of faith and conscience. Centers that violate the act would large penalties and fines that don't apply to abortion centers. Brain Scan Offers First Biological Test in Diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

An event such as sexual assault or a battlefield injury is physically agonizing at the time, but it also can eventually sentence a person to a host of mental symptoms—often vivid flashbacks, anxiety and emotional detachment—known as post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychological evaluations for PTSD cannot always easily distinguish it from other mental illnesses, such as depression, or determine if a patient is over- or underreporting the symptoms. Now, a brain- scanning technique called magnetoencephelography (MEG) could offer the first biological test to help specifically diagnose and treat those with PTSD. In a study published January 20 in Journal of Neural Engineering, MEG correctly identified 97 percent of patients that psychologists previously determined were suffering from PTSD. Carhart Committing Late-Term Abortions That The NE Legislature Wants To Ban

A bill that would ban abortions in Nebraska after 20 weeks gestation was filed yesterday by Speaker of the Legislature Sen. Mike Flood. It was introduced in response to late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart’s announced intensions of introducing late-term abortions to Nebraska such as those that he did in Kansas while in the employment of the late George Tiller.

The Associated Press reported that Carhart denies doing abortion past 22 weeks gestation. However, Operation Rescue has obtained an undercover tape of an interview with LeRoy Carhart made on December 3, 2009, that reveals that Carhart is now doing late-term abortions perhaps as late as 30 weeks, many for vague “mental health” reasons.

Strengthening PCC and Church Relationships

In addition to meeting with pastors, there are many ways you can improve partnerships with churches.
  • Maintain communication through regular updates, newsletters, prayer calendars, etc. - through mailed or emailed materials.
  • Have one or two pastors on your board, or create a pastors advisory committee to which you'll be accountable and from whom you can receive input on issues or projects that come up. (Too many pastors on a board can be a drawback, but it's good to have some representation there.)
  • Offer your brochures or other ministry tools for the church's use.
  • Provide Sanctity of Human Life Sunday bulletin inserts free of charge to your supporting churches.
  • When emailing pastors, provide an online link to BFL's Pro-Life Pastors' Corner blog: http://blfpastorscorner.blogspot.com/

If you have helpful experiences to share or other suggestions for improving PCC and Church relationships, please comment!

Virginia Pro-Abortion Group Attacks Pregnancy Centers

The Virginia affiliate of NARAL held a press conference Wednesday to announce new legislation designed to intimidate women who go to pregnancy centers for help and options counseling. The bills (SB 188 and HB 452) seek to remove the funding stream available to pregnancy centers via the purchase of Choose Life license plates and to require a new state regulation of all pregnancy centers. That could include requiring the placement of signs outside PCCs stating, “that it does not perform or refer women for abortions.” It would also require state officials to collect a sample of all materials distributed at the center for analysis and potential criticism and a member of the centers' board to sign a document certifying that it "provides only factually and medically accurate information about pregnancy, contraception, and abortion to a person seeking counseling, information, or assistance from the center.” LifeSiteNews

False claim: Abortion is a small part of PP's business

Planned Parenthood claims abortion accounts for only 5 to 7 percent of its business. It arrives at these figures by dividing the number of abortions by the number of “services” provided, or alternatively, by the number of unduplicated clients. Research shows, however, that if PP’s abortion income ($132,809,850) is divided by the total clinic income ($374,700,000), their abortion business is actually a whopping 35 percent per of its clinic income. 'Right to abortion' enslaves women

Iñigo Urien Azpitarte, an expert on violence against women warned this week that the “right to abortion” championed by feminists and abortion supporters ends up enslaving women because they are turned into instruments of sexual gratification. Access to “abortion on demand” has affected relations between men and women. “If a man thinks that abortion is an easily accessible option for a woman, he will easily feel disconnected from her and leave her with an unwanted pregnancy - since she can easily obtain an abortion. While it is true that some women can resist pressure and refuse to abort, the legalization of abortion creates a vicious circle from which many others cannot escape,” he said. CNA

The abortionist's eye is on us

Abortion and racism are evil twins, born of the same lie. Where racism now hides its face in public, abortion is accomplishing the goals of which racism only once dreamed. Together, abortionists are destroying humanity at large and the black community in particular. . . . 'Grey zone' of fetal viability

According to World Health Organisation statistics, one in every 10 children born is premature, born before 38 weeks of pregnancy. Only a fraction are born in the debatable period of 22 to 24 weeks. “This is the grey zone of medicine,’’ said Dr Chetan Shetty, a neonatologist at Holy Family Hospital, Bandra. Not surprisingly then, the American Association of Pediatrics has always maintained that babies born after spending less than 23 weeks in the womb are not considered “viable.’’

In other words, they could have high mortality (death rate) and morbidity (handicap). International statistics say that an infant born in the 23rd or 24th week of gestation has a 16% chance of surviving with intensive neonatal care and a 64% risk of serious disability, including brain damage and blindness. Ultrasound not enough to reach and serve the high risk abortion-minded?

What are your thoughts? Check out a new blog post at Effective PRC that discusses the difference between the traditional, 'global' (client-focused) services model of pregnancy center ministry in light of a new, 'linear' (problem-focused) approach as it relates to staying on the cutting edge of reaching and effectively serving the abortion-minded. Audio of medical PRC Executive training is also attached to that post discussing the issue.

Secretary Clinton Pushes Abortion

In Washington last week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States would engage in a massive funding push over the next five years to promote “reproductive health care and family planning” as a “basic right” around the word. Clinton has previously stated for the record that this includes abortion. The plan includes potentially siphoning off funds currently directed towards fighting HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria. Girls Less Likely Than Boys to Recommend Abortion to Friends

A new survey conducted by the Girl Scouts finds girls are less likely than boys to recommend abortion to their friends. And, overall, less than 10 percent of young people say they would ever suggest an abortion. A comparison of the two shows a marked shift toward more ethical and responsible beliefs and values and civic involvement among teens and tweens, the organization noted.

The study also finds that one third of teenagers say they intend to wait until they are married to have sex compared to less than a quarter (24 percent) in 1989. Among teenagers, girls are less likely than boys to say they would have sex (18 percent vs. 38 percent). In addition, 71 percent say their religious beliefs are important to them. LifeNews

Abortionist to Haiti: "Stew in Your Own Juices"

Joyce Tarnow, owner of a Florida abortion clinic, where many Haitian-Americans reside, made some shocking comments to a newspaper two years ago. In July 2004, she told the New Times newspaper, "I try to get as many people sterilized as are in my way." The article focusing on how she was closing her abortion business that did as many as 800-900 abortions a year. She told the paper she supports population control because America "can't take all the people in the world. We need to help nations that can subsist and let others wither on the vine." Her advice for the country? "Stew in your own juices." LifeNews

National Cancer Institute Researcher Admits Abortion Breast Cancer Link

U.S. National Cancer Institute researcher Dr. Louise Brinton, who was the chief organizer of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) workshop in 2003 that persuaded women that it was "well established" that "abortion is not associated with increased breast cancer risk," has reversed her position and now admits that abortion and oral contraceptives raise breast cancer risks.

An April 2009 study by Jessica Dolle et al. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center examining the relationship between oral contraceptives and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive form of breast cancer associated with high mortality, in women under age 45, contained an admission from Dr. Brinton and her colleagues that abortion raises breast cancer risk by 40%.

The study found that "a statistically significant 40% increased risk for women who have abortions" exists, and that a " 270% increased risk of triple negative breast cancer (an aggressive form of breast cancer associated with high mortality) among those who used oral contraceptives while under age 18 and a 320% increased risk of triple negative breast cancer among recent users (within 1-5 years) of oral contraceptives," also exists. Planned Parenthood Director Bemoans Lack of Info about Natural Family Planning

In one of a pair of recent articles by major Canadian media exploring how women are increasingly turning away from hormonal contraception, the executive director for Sexual Health Access Alberta (formerly known as Planned Parenthood Alberta), bemoans the lack of information about natural family planning.

In the most recent of the two articles, published yesterday in Canwest papers across the country, the SHAA director criticized the medical establishment for its pill-focused approach to contraception. "What I see in our communities is an absolute failure to move beyond the idea that hormonal birth control is the be-all and end-all," said Laura Wershler. What's happening is we're not developing support, programs and advocacy for women looking for non-hormonal methods. There's this lack of knowledge and understanding within my own field," Wershler continued, referring to natural methods of birth regulation that involve awareness about the woman’s reproductive cycle. "Women are going to sexual-health clinics and being laughed off by the doctors and clinics for looking for alternatives." LifeSiteNews

New Health Care Bill and the Meaning of Birth Intervals?

Jim Harden of CompassCare was interviewed recently for a Washington Times article regarding our perspective on the language in the proposed Health Care reform bill regarding the 'Birth Intervals' language used.

Query: Does anyone have any thoughts as to how the new health care reform could impact the PRC movement positively or negatively? Post a comment here.

Importance of Pre-Abortion Counseling

Abortion is seen by some women having them as a way to salvage a relationship with a husband or boyfriend, but a new study finds women and men who are not properly counseled before the abortion ultimately find themselves suffering from relationship problems and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many women have abortions under the false assumption it will preserve or help their relationships. The study indicates that better pre-abortion counseling would prevent some abortions by helping women understand abortion is not a solution to relationship problems -- but actually causes more. Skewed China birth rate to leave 24 million men single

More than 24 million Chinese men of marrying age could find themselves without spouses in 2020, state media reported on Monday, citing a study that blamed sex-specific abortions as a major factor. The Global Times said abductions and trafficking of women were "rampant" in areas with excess numbers of men. Illegal marriages and forced prostitution were also problems in those areas, it said.

The report said the study urged the government to relax the so-called "one-child" policy and study the possibility of encouraging "cross-country marriages." It has said the policy has averted 400 million births. AFP

Editor: Interesting use of the word "averted." Makes it sound as though the babies just got shifted over to another time or place instead of having been irrevocably destroyed.

ObamaCare: Why Private Insurers Like Paying for Abortion

Abortion has emerged again as a key sticking point in negotiations over healthcare reform. The fuss has exposed what's been a fairly quiet practice: most health plans now pay for abortions, no questions asked. Why? It saves lots of money. According to the Health Care Blue Book, an abortion performed in an physician's office typically costs $397. A vaginal delivery costs $5,992, while a c-section is $8,558. (These are estimates based on the site's database of in-network charges negotiated by insurers.) Forbes

How much do you make?

Planned Parenthood affiliates in California pay their top executives well and provide many of them with generous benefit packages, even though Planned Parenthood has pleaded with the state legislature in recent years that it was turning away as many as 10,000 patients a month for lack of sufficient funding. Here is a list of the compensation paid to the five top Planned Parenthood executives at each California affiliate, from highest paid to lowest paid. CalCatholic

6 major problems with Senate health bill

NRLC believes that enactment of the abortion-related provisions of the Senate-passed health care bill would ultimately result in substantial expansions of abortion, driven by federal administrative decrees and federal subsidies, and a vote to advance such legislation would be described in those terms in the NRLC congressional scorecard for the 111th Congress

In contrast, inclusion of the substance of the House-passed Stupak-Pitts abortion language would preserve long-established federal policies on abortion, and would fully address our concerns regarding the abortion policy issues.

Rally Protests Planned Parenthood’s Racial Genocide on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Pro-life leaders are gathering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to protest Planned Parenthood’s creation of the largest abortion clinic in America and the racist roots of the nation’s largest abortion provider. The event will begin January 18, 9:30 a.m., at 1949 Cullen Boulevard in Houston. The abortion clinic is a six-story high, 78,000-square-foot monstrosity set in the midst of four communities, of which 80% are minorities. Formerly a bank, the abortion clinic will be dedicated for late-term abortions and is scheduled to open in April. Liberty Counsel

Doc lost license once, accused of another death

An Anaheim doctor who lost his medical license in 2002 after the death of a newborn, only to have it reinstated, is facing state allegations of negligence in the case of a woman who died during an abortion.
Dr. Andrew Rutland, an obstetrician-gynecologist, could be temporarily suspended from practicing after a California Medical Board hearing Thursday in San Diego. According to state legal documents, a 30-year-old patient died last year after Rutland is alleged to have given her anesthesia without knowing the safe dosage. He is also accused of practicing in an unlicensed office and performing surgery outside a hospital without malpractice insurance, the board documents say. OC Register

Pro-Abort Wish List

Forward-looking pro-abortion advocates hope soon to see abortion fueled nationwide with taxpayer money, explicit sex education implemented in every public school, and young medical students recruited to replenish an aging generation of abortionists, according to one columnist outlining a wish list for "the struggle for reproductive rights and justice" in the next ten years. RH Reality Check contributor Amanda Marcotte reflected that, "after all, the past decade was a pretty bleak one. The pro-choice movement didn't advance the ball down the field, and even our defensive maneuvers didn't work so well at times." LifeSiteNews

Dr. Choi Anna and colleagues formed the group Gynob which calls on other doctors to declare whether they have performed illegal abortions. We sold our soul for money. Abortion was an easy way to make money." LifeSiteNews

Viability: What the Pro-Life Movement Must Do to Survive & Thrive

A new book by Mike Fichter, president of Indian Right to Life, says it's time for the entire life movement to start building for its long term viability through thoughtful, strategic development that will enable us to do more than just survive - but to thrive. "This isn’t a sprint, and we’re not playing games. We cannot afford to be distracted by chasing every new program that comes along, and we can’t pretend that just doing more of the same will get us where we need to go. We are in the most significant time in the history of the life movement. We can do more than we dared to dream when we shake loose from the norm and start thinking big. This is our time – let’s shake things up!"

The worst way to build a board

Mike Fichter confesses he used to end Right to Life meetings like this: “We are always looking for more board members. If you would like to be on board, we sure would like to have you.” Then he'd give the details of the next board meeting. "Looking back on those days, it’s a wonder that I didn’t cause more organizational damage than I did." Why would anyone want to extend such an invitation to complete strangers? It’s the worst way in the world to build a board of directors. Well meaning, but flirting with disaster nonetheless.

Service on your board of directors is a privilege and an honor not to be extended lightly. In fact, the opportunity should never be extended unless a candidate has been thoroughly vetted, meets a leadership need, is approved by the current board in advance, and agrees to meet the established expectations for board members. Keep the Dream of Life Growing . . .

Every day, more than 450 women who visit a pregnancy center choose life. Let that sink in for a moment. That number is the equivalent of children attending an entire elementary school. And it’s a testament to the power of your partnership with Care Net. However, 3,300 pregnancies still end with abortion every day. Sadly, too many women do not learn the truth in time: that there are positive, realistic, life-affirming alternatives to abortion. Caring Together Online

Underserved outreach

Eighty-eight percent of abortions occur in major metropolitan areas. While Care Net has 125 pregnancy centers operating in metro areas across the country, we must keep growing — rapidly. One goal is to establish a flagship inner-city center in Washington, D.C., to serve as a model for additional inner-city centers. By partnering with local church and community leaders, we pray for better relationships with local women. The center will emphasize abstinence until marriage for healthier lifestyles that strengthen families and provide children the best nurturing environment. Caring Together Online

Care Net's 2009 progress report

According to Caring Together Online:

  • Last year, Option Line contacts increased 17%. A total of 236,501 contacts — more than 4,500 women per week — received positive, life-affirming answers to pregnancy-related questions. Many were connected to local pregnancy centers.
  • Care Net pregnancy centers ministered to 372,267 women. More than 31,600 volunteers provided peer counseling, ultrasounds, maternity necessities, and more. By God’s grace, 95% of the pregnant women served chose life!
  • 15,270 made decisions to follow or rededicate their lives to Christ.
  • The national abortion rate tumbled 25% to a post-Roe low — a trend even TIME magazine credits in part to pregnancy centers.
  • Care Net’s network of pregnancy centers grew to 1,180, outnumbering Planned Parenthood abortion clinics.

Make The Call: Lapsed donors responding to personal touch

Nonprofits are leaking donors these days. Finding new folks with willing checkbooks is expensive. Re-engaging donors who have lapsed is getting very fashionable, especially by using the telephone. Non-Profit Times

Editor: BFL does not use telemarketers, but we do make a point of periodically phoning donors -- including churches -- just to say "thank you" and "how can we pray for you?" We do not use the occasion to solicite funds, but it is an effective way to reconnect.

Fundraising in the Age of Cynicism

Too many fundraising offers are vague. They do little more than wave a brand in people's faces and hope that motivates them to give. That old, snake-oil marketing assumption plays right into cynicism. Instead, treat donors as partners. Or investors. Tell them about specific dollar amounts that will accomplish specific goals. That shows donors you need their dollars to accomplish specific things. Fundraising Success

Brand Innovations

A bad economy is a golden opportunity to do the things you know you need to do but have avoided. But all too often, organizations get caught up in thinking they have accomplished something and stop being creative and innovative regarding how their brand communicates to people. . . . Thirty to forty years ago, when these ministries began, they inspired action. Their voice was adopted by their generation as its own. Many may still be well known among the 50- to 75-year-old age group, but for those under 30, they are relics of a bygone era. The next generation sees their brands in the past tense. Spainish Parliament Approves Abortions Up to 14 Weeks, 22 in Some Cases

The Spanish Parliament today approved legislation to legalize abortions through 14 weeks for any reason and 22 weeks in some additional cases. The cabinet of the Spain government, headed by President Rodriguez Zapatero, has proposed a bill that would expand abortions and legalize them up to the fourteenth week of pregnancy. The vote in the 350-seat Congress of Deputies was 184-158 with one abstention, according to an AP report. The measure now goes to the Senate, which is expected to approve the pro-abortion bill early next year. LifeNews

Pelosi: "Thank God" Senate Bill Funds Abortions

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims she has enough votes to pass a pro-abortion health care bill in the House, though that is disputed. In a press conference, Pelosi talked about the differences between the House and Senate bills, some of which she liked and some disliked. But she appealed to a higher power in complementing one aspect of the Senate measure. The Senate bill "doesn't have a public option, doesn't expand Medicare for the (age) 55 to 64 group, and has abortion language that is completely different from the House -- thank God." LifeNews

Women on "Birth Control Shot" Suffer Bone Problems

Nearly half of women using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), commonly known as the birth control shot [Depo Provera?], will experience high bone mineral density loss in the hip or lower spine within two years of beginning the contraceptive, according to researchers. The study, reported in the January 2010 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was the first to show that women on the birth control shot who smoke, have low levels of calcium intake and never gave birth are at the highest risk for BMD loss. The researchers also found that high risk women continued to experience significant losses in BMD during the third year of the use of the contraceptive injection, especially in the hip - the most common facture site in elderly women. Cervical cancer link to early sex

Having sex at an early age can double the risk of developing cervical cancer, a study of 20,000 women suggests. The investigation into why poorer women have a higher risk of the disease found they tended to have sex about four years earlier than more affluent women. Previously, it had been thought the disparity was the result of low screening uptake in poorer areas. BBC, Christian Institute

Hope House burns!

In what may turn out to be arson-related, a fire at the Living Hope Women's Center Whiteriver Clinic (AZ) has closed the facility until further notice. Initial evidence indicates the fire probably started in the back of the building after an unknown person or persons first vandalised the Fatherhood Store destroying televisions, VCRs and other valuable equipment and items. President of the Living Hope Women's Center governing board and former executive director Dinah Monahan said the fire did not burn the building to the ground, but it did cause enough fire and smoke damage to gut it and make it at least temporarily useless as a clinic.
