The female baby - so newborn that her placenta and umbilical cord were still attached -was discovered by a man who was searching a bin for recyclables.

It is an interesting question. Why are so many Japanese women suffering from post-abortion stress? We have heard from women who had abortions decades ago, yet they can’t forget or forgive themselves and all those who pressured them to do it. They were most often pressured by parents, especially moms, who surely thought they were doing what was best for their daughter. But though all around them said abortion was the only way, they often can’t seem to move on.

1) This study adds to the rapidly accumulating world literature on abortion and mental health. Even in a culture wherein abortion is widespread and is mandated by the government after women give birth once, the magnitude of psychological risks are comparable to those identified in other parts of the world (e.g., Australia, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, US).
2) The 1st trimester of a later pregnancy may be the most difficult time for women, who have experienced an induced abortion, since the majority of abortions occur early in pregnancy.
3) The psychological experience of abortion is more likely to be associated with long-term psychological distress than spontaneous abortion.
Editor: I might add a few thoughts. One relates to the idea that in China, not only is abortion "widespread and mandated," it is not stigmatized by a religious or pro-life community. Another factor could be related to the horror of forced abortion. Imagine the anxiety that the one-child policy exerts on every pregnancy. Finally, the experience of abortion in China may be more horrific -- I don't know, but that could be a significant factor.

Taiwan’s crackdown on sex-selective abortion showing marginally positive results
LifeSiteNews: Taiwan’s health authorities began warning doctors last year that they could have their licenses revoked if they were found guilty of committing sex-selective abortions.
Department of Health figures showed Taiwan’s gender ratio at birth from 2004 to 2010 was between 109 and 112 males for every 100 females, compared to a natural ratio of about 106 males to 100 females. The government agency estimated that this has resulted in up to 3,000 missing female babies each year. However, figures from 2011 showed that 108 males babies were born for every 100 female babies. That’s the same as 993 female fetuses saved last year.

Abortion rules to be tightened in biggest shake-up for a generation - Telegraph: The Department of Health is to announce plans for a new system of independent counselling for women before they finally commit to terminating a pregnancy. The move is designed to give women more “breathing space.” Pro-life campaigners suggest the change could result in up to 60,000 fewer abortions each year in Britain. Last year, 202,400 were carried out. The plan would introduce a mandatory obligation on abortion clinics to offer women access to independent counselling, to be run on separate premises by a group which does not itself carry out abortions.

Gender Test Works, Could Lead to Sex-Selection Abortions
The Intelligender test kit, one of a handful of different kinds, has prompted concerns over the last few years that it could lead to an increase in the use of sex-selection abortions. Australian pharmacies began selling the kit years ago and it eventually made its way to New Zealand — claiming to be able to detect the gender of an unborn child when used. The test kit makers claim the test offers a 90 percent accuracy rate in determining the sex of the baby after eight weeks into the pregnancy. Also sold in the United States since 2006, the test takes 10 minutes and supposedly identifies a “confidential element” found in the hormones of a pregnant woman when she is carrying a girl. When a pregnant woman’s urine is mixed with the chemicals in the kit, it supposedly turns green or black to indicate a boy and orange or yellow to indicate a girl.
