- Louisiana's state Senate passed a ban on animal-human hybrids Monday morning.
- Minnesota's pro-life Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) signed a ban on taxpayer funding of human cloning into law on Saturday.
- Texas is already putting funds toward adult stem cell research and considering legislation to ban cloning as well as regulate stem cell research.
Third poll confirms America is more pro-life
A Fox News poll finds 49 percent of voters today describe themselves as "pro-life" and 43 percent as "pro-choice" on the issue of abortion. This is the first time more voters have described themselves as pro-life in the poll since April 2004. Last year, the numbers were essentially the reverse of the current findings -- at that time 41 percent said they were pro-life and 49 percent pro-choice (September 2008). Comparing abstinence-only and "comprehensive" sex ed
The Institute for Research and Evaluation has found that in school/classroom-based settings 44% of abstinence programs had improved rates of teen abstinence, while only 36% of comprehensive sex education programs had improved some measure of condom use. Russian births up, but economic crisis threatens gains
Searches for "abortion" on the Russian Internet portal Yandex have more than doubled since the onset of the financial crisis. According to the United Nations, Russia has the highest rate of abortions in the world, in a hold over from Soviet times when the operation replaced traditional forms of contraception. Understanding America's Shift on Abortion
People under 30 are more opposed to abortion than those older, perhaps because their first baby pictures were often taken in utero. I also wonder if younger women are now sure enough of their sexual autonomy and their choices generally, that they don't view limits on abortion as attacks on their freedom overall. NYC Mayor Testifies in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's company, Bloomberg News, in October 2007. The suit says the staunch abortion advocate condoned "systemic, top-down discrimination against female employees."

Missouri Senate Bill Causes Pro-Lifers Problems
The Missouri state Senate today approved a bill that would seemingly help women avoid forced abortions, however, the bill is causing headaches for pro-life advocates, who are calling for it to be defeated or changed. Pam Fichter, the president of Missouri Right to Life, explains that the Senate bill "creates a two-tiered system of enforcement based on how frequently an abortion clinic does abortions. Abortion clinics that perform abortions no more than one-day-a-week are exempt from the new informed consent provisions – offering an ultrasound, fetal development information, abortion alternatives, etc. for three years. But such one-day-a-week clinics must comply with the old, 2003 women’s right to know law. Reflection on Psalm 46
Psalm 46 is a wonderful psalm about disruptive change. It starts with the promise that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." We might assume that the God who made an orderly creation would at least guarantee solid ground under our feet, but we would be wrong. That is not what is promised. Instead it is that "we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult."(vs 2-3) The point is that the ground under our feet may not remain solid. There is no immunity promised from earthquakes or landslides, no guarantees that creation will not push back if we abuse it. The promise is that even in the midst of disaster we have reason to trust in God. L'Abri

Changing Patterns of Nonmarital Childbearing in the United States
The proportion of births to unmarried mothers in the United States has risen steeply over the past few decades, consistent with patterns in other countries. In March, CDC reported that about 4 in 10 births in the United States in 2007 were to unmarried mothers. While a great deal of focus has been placed on births to unmarried teens, 6 out of 10 births to women between the ages of 20 and 24 were among unmarried women in 2007. No taxes for abortion
Democrats in Congress and the Obama administration want to overturn pro-life "riders" that ensure that U.S. taxpayers are not forced to hand-over their hard-earned dollars to pay for and promote abortion on demand. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says President Barack Obama's selection to head the Office of Legal Counsel, Dawn Johnsen, does not have enough votes to be confirmed. Océane McKenzie had a severe narrowing of the left ventricle of the heart. If not fixed, the left side of the heart would not function. A recently published study is one of the first to examine the impact of abortion on men's relationships. The authors suggested that men's problems with jealousy and drug use after an abortion may also be related to differences in coping with bereavement. Studies of other forms of pregnancy loss have found that men's grief tends to be less easily resolved, possibly due to the fact that they often receive little support, thereby leading men to feel less secure and to “self-medicate” by turning to drugs. The inclusion of men in the data collection was one of the study's strengths, but more long-term studies are needed to compare problems in relationships both before and after abortion. Vatican blames the Pill for environmental pollution
An article in L'Osservatore Romano claims there is substantial evidence available to show that the environment is being flooded with synthetic female hormones because of widespread use of oral contraceptives and the morning-after pill, resulting in a 'devastating' increase in male infertility with increasing numbers of couples struggling to conceive. Experts in Italy have dismissed the claims and say the hormones such as estrogen, which are contained in the contraceptive Pill, "are present everywhere... in plastic, in disinfectants and in meat that we eat." Mid-level donors essentially provide the largest share of net dollars to most organizations. They are also great prospects for cultivation, upgrading for planned giving and entire continuum of giving. UAE fines mother over baby death
A court in Dubai has found a woman who lost her unborn child in a traffic accident guilty of manslaughter in what is said to be an unprecedented ruling. The judge based the ruling on Islamic law. The court said the rights of unborn babies needed to be protected. Prosecutors had argued that the verdict should act as a deterrent. Dubai's traffic court ordered the bereaved mother to pay $5,450 in blood money and fined her for "unintentional homicide." The head of traffic prosecution said women in the third trimester of pregnancy should avoid driving altogether to protect their own and their fetus' lives. BBC

City blocks plans to turn church building into PCC
A dissolved church's plan to donate its building to the Alpha Women's Center of Grand Rapids has been blocked by Wyoming, Michigan, city officials. Wyoming's Zoning Board of Appeals voted 5-2 Monday against letting the PCC move into Newhall Baptist Church, which held its final service Sunday. The main objection was allowing a non-residential use in the neighborhood. Carolyn Koole, executive director, said Alpha is having trouble meeting the $3,000 monthly rent at its current location. Distinctions: Cell or organism?
Some persist in the scientifically ludicrous claim that the immediate product of any human reproductive process is just a "cell," rather than an "organism." So one can reproduce and kill it for its body parts, etc., and pretend one is just doing "stem cell research." There is a critical difference between an "organism" and its constituent cells. There are stem cells (derived from adult tissue and cord blood), and then there are embryonic stem cells. The two are not the same. In fact, they are quite different. The former have always been a natural part of the body tissues; the latter term was contrived. Life Issues

Attempts to Redefine "Embryo"
An old Nature editorial decries the sophistic attempt within bioethics and the life sciences to pretend that an embryo before implantation in a uterus isn't really an embryo. Nature supports ESCR, but its 2005 editorial notes that the redefinition of the term "embryo" is being pursued for political purpose rather than scientific accuracy. Plan B and the 'contraception will reduce abortions' myth
With the news that the FDA will now allow the "morning-after" pill, known as Plan B, to be sold over-the-counter to 17-year-old girls, I'm sure the abortion lobby - which includes most of the mainstream media - will continue to spread disinformation that a) Plan B is a contraceptive that will reduce the need for abortions, and b) the increased availability of contraceptives such as Plan B will reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thus abortions. Oppose Obama ESCR regulations
On March 9, 2009 President Obama issued an executive order creating an incentive to create and destroy human embryos. He directed the National Institutes of Health to draft guidelines for the distribution of funds for more embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). On April 23, NIH posted these proposed guidelines that would designate your tax dollars for experiments on human embryos supposedly "leftover" from in vitro fertilization. Instead of promoting the adoption of these human embryos, these guidelines would result in their deaths. The public has 30 days to comment on these guidelines.
