Planned Parenthood Forced to Settle Suit, Failed to Report Child Rape

Planned Parenthood Forced to Settle Suit, Failed to Report Child Rape | LifeNews.com: The Life Legal Defense Foundation, a pro-life legal group, supported Denise Fairbanks, who had been sexually abused by her father from the time she was 13. When she became pregnant at age 16, her father took her to Planned Parenthood for an abortion. Although she informed the abortion clinic staff that she was being forced to have sex, they chose not to comply with mandatory reporting procedures

The Planned Parenthood staff did not inform local law enforcement, nor did they make any further inquiries into Fairbanks’ paternal abuse. After the abortion, Fairbanks was returned to the same abusive situation, where she remained for another year-and-a-half. More than a year later, her father was apprehended through a report filed by Denise’s basketball coach, and sent to jail.

Botched Abortion at Lone Birmingham Clinic Brings on New Lawsuit

Botched Abortion at Lone Birmingham Clinic Brings on New Lawsuit - Christian Newswire: Not even six months after the closure of one dangerous Birmingham abortion facility -- brought on by the careless injury of two female patients -- yet another woman, Ms. Roberta Clark, has come forward and filed suit against the city's only remaining abortion clinic: Planned Parenthood.

In 2010, Planned Parenthood of Birmingham originally underwent investigation after Live Action President Lila Rose uncovered their regular practice of illegally providing abortions for minors and choosing to cover up statutory rape cases.

At that time, Planned Parenthood was placed under a one-year probation. The recent lawsuit filed against them by Ms. Clark details an incident that actually took place during this probationary period and creates the question of how it went unnoticed by the Alabama Department of the Public Health, which should have been closely monitoring the facility.

Abortion never medically necessary

Forum in Dublin on maternal health - The Irish Times - Mon, Sep 10, 2012: An international symposium on maternal healthcare in Dublin at the weekend has concluded that abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of a mother.

A panel of speakers formally agreed to a “Dublin declaration” on maternal healthcare. It stated:
“As experienced practitioners and researchers in obstetrics and gynaecology, we affirm that direct abortion is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman.
“We uphold that there is a fundamental difference between abortion and necessary medical treatments that are carried out to save the life of the mother, even if such treatment results in the loss of life of her unborn child.
“We confirm that the prohibition of abortion does not affect, in any way, the availability of optimal care to pregnant women.”
Leading Belgian cancer physician and presenter at the conference Frederic Amant is quoted in The Lancet as saying, “Fear of chemotherapy should not be a reason to terminate pregnancy. There is no evidence termination improves outcomes for the mother.”

Abortion and regret

Abortion and regret: A new article from the journal that brought us the "after-birth abortion" (BMJ's Journal of Medical Ethics) tries to explain away post-abortion regret. From the abstract --
The article considers three theses about postabortion regret which seek to illustrate its pertinence to reasoning about abortion, and which are often deployed, either explicitly or implicitly, to dissuade women out of that reproductive choice. The first is that postabortion regret renders an abortion morally unjustified. The second is that that a relatively high incidence of postabortion regret—compared with a lower incidence of postnatal regret in the relevant comparator field—is good evidence for the moral impermissibility of abortion choice. The third is that high rates of postabortion regret suggest that abortion is not the most prudent or welfare-maximising choice for the woman concerned. All three theses argue for the compellingness of knowledge about postabortion regret in moral and practical reasoning about abortion, especially from the pregnant woman’s point of view. This article argues that all three theses are flawed. In particular, it seeks to remind readers that feelings of regret directed at past decisions are often decoupled from the fact of the matter about their moral or rational justification. Moreover, certain features of reproductive decisions in particular make regret an especially unsuitable yardstick for actual justification in this context, and even less epistemically reliable as evidence for a lack of justification than it may be in other fields of decision-making. The implication is that rates of postabortion regret, even if they can be presumed to be higher than rates of postnatal regret, are not as pertinent to moral and practical reasoning about abortion as is sometimes suggested.
Editor: While it's true that the experience of post-abortion regret is not absolute and that feelings of regret are an unreliable indicator of guilt, it is common enough that post-abortive women find themselves wishing they'd been warned about it. It's also true that it is not the regret that renders abortion morally unjustified but the inarguable fact of what abortion does -- cruelly ending the life of a defenseless unborn child. Regret is not proof of abortion's impermissibility but is good evidence of it.

Perhaps the pro-life side has been guilty at times of overstating the case, but that could be said to be due to the other side's unwillingness to even entertain the idea. Only a few honest pro-choice people have admitted there is regret, fewer still how devastating that regret can be. Because it's not a regret like getting "caught in a rain shower" on an otherwise delightful outing. It's not even just a "reproductive decision," like which method of birth control to use. It's about causing the death of one's child. I haven't read beyond the abstract, but I would like to know whether she deals with what abortion actually is.

Multiple Abortions Increase Risk of Maternal Death: New Danish Study

A single induced abortion increases the risk of maternal death by 45 percent compared to women with no history of abortion, according to a new study of all women of reproductive age in Denmark over a 25 year period. In addition, each additional abortion is associated with an even higher death rate. Women who had two abortions were 114 percent more likely to die during the period examined, and women had three or more abortions had a 192 percent increased risk of death.

Elevated rates of death were also observed among women who experienced miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies or other natural losses. Women with a history of successful deliveries were the least likely to die during the 25 years examined. Women who had never been pregnant had the highest mortality rate. Among women with a history of multiple pregnancies, women with a history of both abortions and natural losses, but no live births, had the highest mortality rate.

The study is the second record linkage analysis of Danish mortality data to be published this month. The earlier study was limited to comparing mortality rates following only the first pregnancy outcome. It found that abortion of a first pregnancy was associated with a higher rate of death compared to death rates among women who delivered a first pregnancy. The higher death rate among women who had abortions persisted for each of the first ten years following the first pregnancy outcome.

Study: Premarital Sex Detrimental to Relationships

Study: Premarital Sex Detrimental to Relationships - Negatively Impacts Intimacy, Commitment, Sexual Satisfaction: Researchers at Cornell University have stated that abstaining from sex at the beginning of a courtship could lead to a healthier relationship. The research also suggested that having sex early on could stunt the growth of key factors from developing within a healthy relationship including "caring and understanding." The study, printed in the Journal of Marriage and Family, revealed that women who put having sex off for over six months were more satisfied with their relationships than those women who waited less time.

"Precocious premarital sexual activities may have lasting effects on relationship quality," researchers said. "Courtship is a time for exploration and decision-making about the relationship, when partners assess compatibility, make commitments and build on emotional and physical intimacy."

Finnish study: Repeat abortions linked to premature birth

BBC News - Repeat abortions linked to premature birth, study suggests: The more abortions a woman has before her first child, the more likely she is to give birth prematurely, a study 300,858 first-time mothers in Finland of has suggested. The study showed women were three times more likely to have a very premature baby, born before 28 weeks, if they had had three or more abortions. The report was published in the journal Human Reproduction.

From the introduction, emphasis added:
"Induced abortion (IA) is one of the most common gynecological procedures performed on women but the impact of IAs on women’s subsequent childbearing has not yet been properly studied. . . . Many previous studies . . . have found a positive association between IA and risk of preterm birth or a dose– response effect (i.e. the risk of preterm birth increased with increasing number of IAs)."

Danish study reveals higher maternal death rates following abortion

Medical Science Monitor: Medical records for the entire population of women born in Denmark between 1962 and 1991 and were alive in 1980, were linked to death certificates. Mortality rates associated with first pregnancy outcomes (delivery, miscarriage, abortion, and late abortion) were calculated. Odds ratios examining death rates based on reproductive outcomes, adjusted for age at first pregnancy and year of women’s births, were also calculated. Results: A total of 463,473 women had their first pregnancy between 1980 and 2004, of whom 2,238 died. In nearly all time periods examined, mortality rates associated with miscarriage or abortion of a first pregnancy were higher than those associated with birth.

Commentary by the American Association of Pro-Life Ob/Gyns:
A new study of the medical records for nearly half a million women in Denmark reveals significantly higher maternal death rates following abortion compared to delivery. This finding has confirmed similar large-scale population studies conducted in Finland and the United States, http://www.aaplog.org/complications-of-induced-abortion/induced-abortion-and-maternal-mortality/induced-abortion-and-natural-cause-maternal-death/ but contradicts the widely held belief that abortion is safer than childbirth. . . .
Why is this study important?
1) Record-based studies provide complete reproductive history data for all residents. There are very few record-based studies of mortality risks associated with reproductive loss available in the published literature. Without data-linkage to complete reproductive histories (as in this study), results are highly unreliable as prior research suggests as many as 73% of all pregnancy associated deaths are not apparent from death certificates.

2) This study eliminates the potential confounding effect of unknown prior pregnancy history by examining mortality rates associated with first pregnancy outcome alone.
3) No previous record-based studies have compared early induced abortions to later abortions. There is consensus that late-term abortions are associated with more physiological risks and higher rates of maternal mortality in the short term compared to early abortions. However, longer term mortality risks have not been previously examined with record-based data.
From the Eliot Institute: Finding confirms similar large-scale population studies in Finland and US; contradicts widely held belief abortion safer than childbirth

Mother Of Woman Who Died After Abortion Sues Planned Parenthood, Hospital « CBS Chicago: The mother of 24-year-old Tonya Reaves filed a wrongful death lawsuit Monday against Planned Parenthood of Illinois and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. An autopsy found she died of a hemorrhage following a cervical dilation and evacuation performed during an intrauterine pregnancy, according to the medical examiner’s office. Abortionist admits, ‘most women having abortions are not raped’

LifeSiteNews: Shortly before controversy erupted over Congressman Todd Akin’s remarks on abortion in cases of rape, an abortionist bluntly admitted that “most women having abortions are not raped.” D.C. abortionist Willie Parker was responding to an article on the ‘Advancing new standards in reproductive health’ blog of the University of California, San Fransico.

Author Tray Weitz had critiqued the approach of advocates for abortion of using hard cases to make the case for legal abortion. She suggested rather an approach that would validate abortion whatever the circumstances – a ‘rights’-based approach. Parker notes that when abortion “advocates have sought stories from me to make the case for abortion, it has always been a request for tragic circumstances, the stories felt to be the most likely ones to move opinion. The reality is that that is not the typical patient I see, as most women having abortions are not raped or are not carrying a lethally flawed fetus.”

Georgia abortion clinic has violated regs AND waivers for two decades

Stop the madness: Georgia abortion clinic has violated regs AND waivers for two decades | LifeSiteNews.com: In 1994, the Georgia State Planning Agency notified the architect designing Atlanta Women’s Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia, that plans for its two-story late-term abortion clinic needed to include an elevator. The clinic’s owner, HUMEDCO Corporation, which runs a chain of three abortion clinics, claimed it would be too expensive to add an elevator and requested a waiver.

The Georgia Department of Human Services granted the waiver, through August 31, 2005. It went on to grant another waiver, through August 31, 2012. The terms in both cases were that AWMC had to notify prospective patients of the stairs, escort recovering patients down the stairs, and also notify 911 operators that there was no elevator in the event of an emergency.

The clinic was recently found to be not in compliance, and yet it has not been shut down.

Woman Conceived in Rape Responds to Akin Abortion Controversy

Woman Conceived in Rape Responds to Akin Abortion Controversy | LifeNews.com: Rebecca Kiessling responded to the comments saying that the use of the term “legitimate rape” was unnecessary and improper and she gave her advice for how pro-life candidates can thoughtfully and articulately address the sensitive subject of rape and abortion. “If you are 100% pro-life with no rape exceptions, there is no need to question the veracity of a rape victims’ account, because you are against all abortions. It would not matter if a woman was not or not raped.”

Many political candidates stumble over the question of rape and abortion. Kiessling gives a three-step process in terms of how candidates should answer the question:
1. The Supreme Court has said that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment for rapists and that rapists don’t deserve the death penalty. I don’t think the innocent child conceived in rape deserves the death penalty for the crimes of her father. It seems to me that is cruel and unusual punishment.
2. Rape victims are four times more likely to die within the next year after the abortion, with a higher rate of suicide, murder, drug overdose, etc.. As someone who really cares about rape victims, I want to protect them from the rapist, and from the abortion, and not the baby. A baby is not the worst thing that could ever happen to a rape victim — an abortion is. We need to educate the American public on the truth in this matter and not make public policy based on myth and misinformation.
3. Rape victims choose abortion at half the rate of the average unplanned pregnancy, which is over 50%. Only 15-25% of rape victims choose abortion, depending on the study. The majority of rape victims choose to raise her child — not “the rapist’s baby” — HER child.

Knoxville abortion clinic blames closure on new TN law

Knoxville abortion clinic blames closure on new TN law | The Tennessean | tennessean.com: A longtime Knoxville abortion provider closed its doors, blaming a newly enacted Tennessee law that requires doctors performing abortions to hold admitting privileges at local hospitals. The Volunteer Women’s Medical Clinic had two physicians providing abortions. One died after suffering a stroke within days of obtaining hospital privileges, said clinic director Deb Walsh. Another retired physician working with the clinic has not obtained privileges.

In a letter to supporters, Walsh wrote: "I've been able to keep the doors open and the phone staff working up until this week. We've been working on legal remedies, injunction, etc., but I was unable to bridge the financial gap of paying the monthly lease and operating expenses without knowing when we could resume seeing patients. I'm supposed to be out of the building (5000+sq.ft.) before Monday morning and I plan to somehow achieve that. I have visions of carting all the furniture and equipment across the street to the Crisis Pregnancy Center and piling it up on their lawn rather than going through the tedious task of finding a place for everything."

The Unofficial Olympic Sport

Life Issues Institute - The Latest News: The Unofficial Olympic Sport: Hurdler Lolo Jones was famously quoted as saying, “If there’s virgins out there, I just want to let them know, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage.” Bradley Mattes comments:
What does this say about our culture? These young people embrace an extreme heightened sense of discipline when it comes to training their bodies for an athletic event. Yet, when one of them chooses to exercise such discipline in the realm of sexual purity, it is ridiculed. Isn’t it ironic that freedom of “choice” is so often trumpeted by the media, yet this young woman’s choice is mocked?
To call it hypocrisy is an understatement. As a parent, I’ve been faced with the question of why those who choose purity face such abrasive opposition. This is what I shared with my sons, “At any moment you could choose to live like them; however they can never again be like you.”

"I wish my mother had aborted me"

Lynn Beisner writes in The Guardian
It is true that in the past 12 years, I have been able to rise above the circumstances of my birth and build a life that I truly love. But no one should have to make such a Herculean struggle for simple normalcy. Even given the happiness and success I now enjoy, if I could go back in time and make the choice for my mother, it would be abortion.
The world would not be a darker or poorer place without me. Actually, in terms of contributions to the world, I am a net loss. Everything that I have done – including parenting, teaching, researching, and being a loving partner – could have been done as well, if not better by other people. Any positive contributions that I have made are completely offset by what it has cost society to help me overcome the disadvantages and injuries of my childhood to become a functional and contributing member of society.
It is not easy to say, "I wish my mother had aborted me." The right would have us see abortion as women acting out of cowardice, selfishness, or convenience. But for many women, like my mother, abortion would be an inconvenient act of courage and selflessness. I am sad for both of us that she could not find the courage and selflessness. But my attitude is that as long as I am already here, I might as well do all I can to make the world a better place, to ease the suffering of others, and to experience love and life to its fullest.
Editor: There's so much here to comment on . . . where to begin? She actually makes some good points about some pro-life arguments -- they are entirely too subjective. But I don't believe subjectivity can be discounted completely, especially when you consider them from a post-modern perspective (all views are valid).

Aside from all the things she suffered in the past, Beisner's greatest suffering is caused by blindness to the biblical worldview. It would explain suffering, God's sovereignty, the worth of an individual, and our purpose in life.

Six million abortions in the UK since abortion legalized – just 143 to save the mum’s life

Six million abortions – just 143 to save the mum’s life | News | The Christian Institute: According to government figures 6.4 million abortions were performed on residents of England and Wales between 1968 and 2011. Of these just 143 (0.006 per cent) were performed to save the life of the mother or to prevent serious permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the mother. A further 23,778 (0.37%) abortions were performed because the continuance of pregnancy would involve the risk to the life of the woman, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated.

The figures were revealed in response to a Parliamentary Question by Lord Alton of Liverpool, who blogged, “When the case for allowing legal abortion was first placed before Parliament it was argued that the law needed to be changed to deal with extremely serious situations. More than 6 million abortions later the figures reveal that in 99.5% of cases where an unborn child’s life is ended there is no risk to the health of the mother."

Planned Parenthood Ignored Instructions to Call 911 In Tonya Reaves Abortion Death

Planned Parenthood Ignored Instructions to Call 911 In Tonya Reaves Abortion Death :Operation Rescue: Operation Rescue has obtained a recording and computer aided dispatch transcript that indicates on the same day that Tonya Reaves died from hemorrhage caused by a uterine perforation after a second trimester abortion, the Chicago Planned Parenthood that killed her ignored instructions from an emergency dispatcher to directly call 911 in the event of an emergency in order to prevent wasting precious time.

Tonya Reaves received her fatal abortion at 11:00 a.m. on July 20. As Reaves lay hemorrhaging, an employee called to report that elsewhere in the clinic a 16-year old patient was “physically assaulted” by her mother. The 911 Dispatcher is heard admonishing the Planned Parenthood worker for calling 311, which caused a delay in dispatching aid to the scene.

Appeals Court Blocks Arizona Abortion Law

Appeals Court Blocks Arizona Abortion Law - WSJ.com: A federal appeals court temporarily halted a controversial Arizona law that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The decision is a victory for abortion-rights advocates who have sought to block the enforcement of the new law, which was scheduled to take effect on Thursday.

The law, which was passed by the state's Republican legislature and signed by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer in April, would criminalize most abortions after 20 weeks except in medical emergencies. The decision comes just two days after a federal judge refused to block the statute, saying it didn't impose a "substantial obstacle" to the procedure. The judge said it was consistent with standards set by federal courts, and that Arizona had the right to enact such a law.

Just say no: Why abstinence is the better way to go

Just say no: Why abstinence is the better way to go | LifeSiteNews.com: Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA), abstinence, truly lowers the rates of sexually transmitted infections and unintended teenage pregnancies as opposed to comprehensive sex education (CSE), which only focuses on reducing these risks.

Editor: Teaching young people to "just say no" is good in that it's like the parental instructions of Proverbs 1:8-9 -- "a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck." But as experience has shown, young people -- especially Christians -- must also be encouraged to appropriate these lessons for themselves, maturing to the point (as described in Prov. 2:10) where "wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul." The Beauty Of Biblical Balance

Themelios | Article: The Beauty Of Biblical Balance - The Gospel Coalition: Balance is not always a virtue. For example, when Scripture commands us to love God with our whole being (Deut 6:4-5; Mark 12:29-30), it does not add, "Of course, all things in moderation: one must balance love for God with other priorities." Applied in the wrong contexts, the appeal for balance may be a mask for moral indifference and spiritual compromise. But let me assume that we have heeded the warning and turn to some of the different axes around which we need to maintain balance.
