Another Kind of Purity Pledge

Another Kind of Purity Pledge | Movies & TV | Christianity Today: The True Love Waits campaign, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, has since 1993 urged young believers, by way of youth-group talks and paper pledges and purity rings, to abstain from premarital sex. The program and others like it root their argument for abstinence in the logic of payoff: "If you wait for marriage, your future sex life will be hot." As communications expert Christine Gardner told CT recently, these campaigns "are using sex to sell abstinence. They are using the very thing they are prohibiting to admonish young people to wait."

The Road We Know, a laudable new documentary about HIV/AIDS prevention in Botswana (is about a youth-led abstinence campaign of an entirely different kind. (Watch the trailer here, and watch the entire film here.)"

The Next Roe v. Wade?: Jennie McCormack's Abortion Battle

The Next Roe v. Wade?: Jennie McCormack's Abortion Battle - The Daily Beast: Jennie McCormack, who thought she was about 12 weeks along, took the pills (the protocol involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol) the afternoon they arrived. The drugs are FDA-approved only for ending early-stage pregnancies; McCormack had no complications, but the pregnancy turned out to be more advanced than she thought—perhaps between 18 and 21 weeks, experts later speculated—and the size of the fetus scared her.

She didn’t know what to do—“I was paralyzed,” she says—so she put it in a box on her porch, and, terrified, called a friend. That friend then called his sister, who reported McCormack to the police.

Pro-abort bloggess furious friend didn’t get amniocentesis: ‘we’re in more trouble than I thought’ | LifeSiteNews.com: A writer at a popular abortion blog has complained that pro-life “manipulation” has infiltrated “liberal-minded folks” after learning that a friend didn’t want prenatal tests to see if her child should be aborted over abnormalities. That choice left Tara “gobsmacked,” leading her to enter a briefly heated conversation with her friend about how she had been “psychologically duped” by pro-life rhetoric to believe in the child in the womb.

Dear pro-life people: don’t be evil | LifeSiteNews.com: Few things annoy pro-lifers more than being told by supporters of the practice of killing unborn children in their mothers’ wombs that they need to be more “civil.” “How about you stop ripping babies apart limb from limb, and then we’ll consider being ‘nice’!” we’re tempted to say.

Fair enough.

But what if a diehard pro-life advocate who works fulltime as an editor for a pro-life and pro-family news website (i.e. me) said that pro-lifers could stand to be more “civil”?

Philly doctor charged with murder in illegal abortion case is now accused of running pill mill - The Washington Post: The profitable pill mill brought in about $200,000 for Kermit Gosnell from June 2008 until authorities shuttered the west Philadelphia clinic more than 18 months later, according to an indictment.

U.S. Stillbirths Still Prevalent, Often Unexplained

U.S. Stillbirths Still Prevalent, Often Unexplained: Scientific American: Infant mortality has continued to drop in the U.S. during the past several decades. But stillbirths—when a fetus dies after 20 or more weeks of gestation—have remained relatively steady—and account for almost as many deaths as those of babies who die before their first birthday. About one in every 160 pregnancies in the U.S. ends in a stillbirth, which adds up to about 26,000 each year nationwide.

Two new studies, published online Tuesday in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, have analyzed data from large populations of still and healthy births in an effort to search for new causes—and to start to bring the mortality rate down.

Gosnell’s Wife Admits to Grisly, Illegal Late-term Abortions

Gosnell’s Wife Admits to Grisly, Illegal Late-term Abortions :Operation Rescue: Pearl Gosnell, 50, pled guilty to performing an illegal abortion on a baby over 24 weeks and two counts of conspiracy and participating in a corrupt organization. The charges qualify her for up to 54 years in prison, but Judge Benjamin Learner told her she is likely to receive much less time when she is sentenced in February 15, 2012. Defense attorneys confirmed that she will not testify against her husband.

Pearl Gosnell, a cosmetologist by training, assisted her husband with the latest of abortions at his ill-kept Women’s Medical Society mill on Sundays, when the other staff were not present, according to a grand jury report. The viable babies were delivered alive then murdered by “snipping” their spinal cords with scissors. Authorities discovered the severed feet of larger babies kept in jars lining shelves in the clinic during a raid that uncovered the macabre illegal abortion scheme, which led to the arrests of Gosnell and eight of his employees, including Pearl.

Confessions of a Recovering Feminist

CBMW » Confessions of a Recovering Feminist: "Recovering from feminism must first start with an embracing of the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Only then will we see the roots severed because we will be clothed in the humility of Christ, who willingly submitted himself to the Father on our behalf. For older women it will mean embracing and modeling femininity, motherhood, and marriage in a Titus 2 way. For younger women it will mean knowing the godly women in our congregations better than we know the celebrities on late night television.

"Feminist ideology is not simply relegated to the brash Gloria Steinem types, or even the female executive with the corner office. Rather, feminism rises up in ordinary women in our congregations, homes, and in the least obvious place, the mirror. Feminism is in the core of our hearts apart from the saving work of the shed blood of Christ, and not simply because we are militant against male authority, but primarily because we are opposed to the greatest authority of all-our Creator. The feminist is not some abstract "out there" woman. She is staring right at us every morning when we put on our make-up."

What babies learn before they're born

What babies learn before they're born - CNN.com: The fetus, we now know, is not an inert blob, but an active and dynamic creature, responding and adapting as it readies itself for life in the particular world it will soon enter. The pregnant woman is neither a passive incubator nor a source of always-imminent harm to her fetus, but a powerful and often positive influence on her child even before it's born. And pregnancy is not a nine-month wait for the big event of birth, but a crucial period unto itself -- "a staging period for well-being and disease in later life," as one scientist puts it.

This is from a TED talk given by Annie Murphy Paul, author of Origins: How the Nine Months Before Birth Shape the Rest of Our Lives.

Abortion doesn't raise mental illness risk

Abortion doesn't raise mental illness risk - USATODAY.com: Among women with unwanted pregnancies, those who had abortions were no more likely to suffer from problems including anxiety or depression than women who gave birth, the research review by the U.K.'s National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health found.

The research shows the "reassuring news" that abortion does not cause mental health problems, but raises a warning that officials must address the problem of unwanted pregnancy, said Dr. Tim Kendall, the centre's director.

The study is likely to be met by skepticism by those opposed to the practice and believe that terminating a pregnancy can trigger depression or other mental illnesses.

Statement on Plan B by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

"In February 2011, Teva Women’s Health Inc. submitted to the FDA a supplemental new drug application for Plan B One-Step. This application sought to make Plan B One-Step available over the counter for all girls of reproductive age. The science has confirmed the drug to be safe and effective with appropriate use. However, the switch from prescription to over the counter for this product requires that we have enough evidence to show that those who use this medicine can understand the label and use the product appropriately. I do not believe that Teva’s application met that standard. The label comprehension and actual use studies did not contain data for all ages for which this product would be available for use.

" . . . The average age of the onset of menstruation for girls in the United States is 12.4 years. However, about ten percent of girls are physically capable of bearing children by 11.1 years of age. It is common knowledge that there are significant cognitive and behavioral differences between older adolescent girls and the youngest girls of reproductive age." HHS

Critics' Attacks on Abortion/Mental Health Study Baseless

Friday Fax: ANALYSIS: Critics' Attacks on Abortion/Mental Health Study Baseless: Disparaging comments on the methodology apparently resulted from the failure to read Dr Coleman’s section on it. Critics also ignored the data supplement with details on the selected studies. Dr Coleman’s methodology is sound, the selection criteria are clearly specified, and her strategy is in line with the generally accepted guidelines for meta-analysis.

One point of valid criticism recognized by Dr. Coleman is the heterogeneity of the underlying studies. In response, a follow-up meta-analysis was conducted by Professor David Fergusson of the University of Otago, Christchurch, that was limited only to studies that used an unwanted/unintended pregnancy comparison group. In this study (which is under review), the increased risk of developing mental health problems is lower than in Coleman’s, which uses several control groups. However, the results are the same: unswerving evidence that abortion is associated with an increased risk of mental health problems.

Babies' Cells Linger, May Protect Mothers

What would you say if we told you that when a woman has a baby, she gets not just a son or daughter, she gets an army of protective cells--gifts from her children that will stay inside her and defend her for the rest of her life? It's such an enticingly beautiful idea, the scientists who proposed it worry that maybe it's too beautiful.

. . . Carol Artlett, who studies fetal cells at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, even if a woman has a miscarriage or an abortion, even if there is no baby, the cells of an unborn child will stay in the mother for decades. But, why? What exactly are they doin' in there for years and years and years?

. . . The good fetal cell hypothesis proposes that the son or daughter cells stay in mom, not to hurt her, but to protect, defend and repair her for the rest of her life whenever she gets seriously ill. NPR

The Millionaire Abortionist: 'Women's Lives Are My Business'

Merle Hoffman is president and CEO of Choices Women’s Medical Center in Queens, New York, which performs roughly 10,000 abortions annually along with additional health services (from STD testing to prenatal care)) to 50,000 women each year. In January, her memoir, Intimate Wars: The Life and times of the Woman Who Brought Abortion from the Back Alley to the Boardroom, will be released.

In a recent Forbes interview, she used words like "serendipitous," "romantic," and "destiny" to describe her career. "We see over 40,000 patients every year between abortions, women’s health and prenatal. It takes complexity, it takes intensity to take care of the requirements to make sure that every woman who comes here is served with compassion and gets the highest quality of care. And we do all this in a war zone! There’s never been a recognition of what this takes. . . . At the highest, we were doing almost 20,000 abortions a year in the late 80s, early 90s. Now we see about 10,000. It depends on demographics, the number of women in the country in the most fertile age group."

Challenging the Powers of Death with the Gospel of Life

Bloodguilt reflects God's intention to vindicate each precious life---created in his own glorious image---and to avenge innocent lives cut down. For such things there is a reckoning (Lev. 24:17). [See also Genesis 9:5-6]

According to Deuteronomy 21, the shedding of innocent blood leaves everyone in the community under bloodguilt. Those who actively shed blood are guilty. Those who watch it or take no steps to stop it are guilty. Even if you can pray, "Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it shed" (Deut. 21:7), the whole community is still under bloodguilt. An act of atonement is required (Deut. 21:8). Only then will the bloodguilt be "purged" (Deut. 21:9).

If someone you love is murdered, you have no trouble understanding the preeminent nature of this evil. Everything is affected. When a stranger is murdered (Deut. 21:1), you are apt to shrug, go to work, and believe things are not much affected. This is the corrupting lie.

. . . We need to bring the main thing---the cross---to bear on the one thing that most plagues the conscience of this generation and hamstrings their service to God: the disaster of sexual sin that so often ends in the death of the weak and innocent. Tragically, many addressing the bloodguilt of abortion today offer a sprinkling of gospel on a plateful of Kübler-Ross. The abortion-recovery materials now in circulation tend to be anthropocentric, therapeutic Band-Aids over the wasting disease of the soul produced by abortion.

We need you, preachers and teachers. We need theologically rigorous instruction about the sufficiency of the gospel to cleanse away the bloodguilt of abortion and to reconcile us to God. Abortion needs to be called out by name, confessed with tears, and brought under a gospel that atones, justifies, propitiates, expiates, and brings us peace. Gospel Coalition

Gardasil victims speak out in videos

In two new videos, Dr. Joseph Mercola notes that the U.S. government’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System database indicates that Gardasil has been linked to 49 sudden deaths, 213 permanent disabilities, 137 reports of cervical dysplasia, 41 reports of cervical cancer, and thousands of adverse events reports, ranging from headaches and nausea, to outbreaks of genital warts, anaphylactic shock, grand mal convulsion, foaming at the mouth, coma and paralysis. He says it is also concerning that HPV vaccines protect against only two of the more common strains of HPV associated with cancer, HPV-16 and HPV-18, even though there are more than 100 different types of HPV, at least 15 of which cause cancer.

Charlotte Haug, writing in the September issue of New Scientist noted, “Vaccinated women show an increased number of precancerous lesions caused by strains of HPV other than HPV-16 and HPV-18 … what effect will the vaccine have on the other cancer-causing strains of HPV? Nature never leaves a void, so if HPV-16 and HPV-18 are suppressed by an effective vaccine, other strains of the virus will take their place. The question is, will these strains cause cervical cancer? Results from clinical trials are not encouraging. LifeSiteNews

Maternity Coverage Suffering Under Obamacare

Maternity Coverage Suffering Under Obamacare | Heartlander Magazine: Individuals seeking maternity coverage in the non-group insurance market are discovering fewer options are available as insurers seek to cut costs to meet the regulatory demands of President Obama’s health care law.

Greg Scandlen, a health policy expert at The Heartland Institute, says most insurers don’t offer non-group maternity coverage because of cost—those who purchase the policies are almost guaranteed to use them—and this is a problem no government mandate can solve.

“Maternity coverage is typically optional, as is prescription coverage,” Scandlen said. “So-called ‘complications of pregnancy’ are covered as regular medical services. Usually one can buy a maternity rider, but it isn’t a great deal—it amounts to dollar swapping since the only people to buy it are those planning on having a baby.”

He also suggests costs have grown because of the increased frequency of C-Sections, which have in turn been encouraged by available maternity coverage. “C-Sections are much more expensive and unnecessary in most cases. People opt for them because they are convenient—a woman can schedule her childbirth to suit her calendar,” Scandlen said. “People who are paying their maternity costs directly are less likely to pay extra for the convenience.”

Scandlen maintains expectant parents should simply ensure any complications are covered under their policy, and be prepared to pay the costs for childbirth.

Survey: U.S. Doctors Disagree On Pregnancy Start

Survey: U.S. Doctors Disagree On Pregnancy Start | Fox News: Most U.S. doctors believe pregnancy starts when the sperm fertilizes the egg, a survey shows, contradicting the position of a key medical group with a view that could potentially affect U.S. policy and laws regarding contraception and research.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the leading organization for this field of medicine, defines pregnancy as beginning when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, roughly a week after fertilization.
