IVF, Mass Production and Coercion | After Abortion: "My reflection on this problem was prompted by a call I received last year from a woman who was experiencing severe post-abortion reactions following an multi-fetal pregnancy reduction procedure. Prior to undergoing an in vitro fertilization procedure, she had told the doctor she would not agree to abortion under any circumstance and he had expressed respect for her beliefs. Despite this, he implanted several embryos with the expectation that most would not 'take.' When several of the implanted embryos did implant, he quickly began to pressure her to abort the 'extras' to avoid losing them all. Eventually the mother, who desperately wanted children and abhorred abortion, did as her doctor ordered."

Woman in intensive care after a late term abortion at a Melbourne clinic

Woman in intensive care after a late term abortion at a Melbourne clinic | Herald Sun: Health authorities have launched investigations after a seriously ill woman was rushed to hospital last week following complications during surgery at a Melbourne clinic that specialises in late term abortions. She was reportedly 23 weeks' pregnant and suffered organ failure after the abortion. The woman remains in hospital in intensive care following complications during a late-term abortion at the Marie Stopes Maroondah clinic, formerly known as the Croydon Day Centre.

The doctor at the clinic said the woman had a serious pre-existing medical condition and the abortion had nothing to do with her current state of health. The Medical Board of Australia held a special hearing yesterday to quiz medical staff involved in the procedure. It is believed that one of the doctors involved has previously been criticised by the MBA.

UK abortion rules to be tightened in biggest shake-up for a generation

Last year, 202,400 were carried out. The plan would introduce a mandatory obligation on abortion clinics to offer women access to independent counselling, to be run on separate premises by a group which does not itself carry out abortions.

Review: We shall see God

Product description:
No author in history has more material in print than Charles Spurgeon. During his lifetime, Spurgeon and his writings affected the world far and wide. Today, nearly 120 years after his death, countless people continue to have a passion for this London preacher, and more and more discover him every day. Some of Spurgeon’s most powerful sermons were those that he preached on the topic of Heaven. Up until now, however, very few of these sermons have been accessible to a mass audience. In what is sure to become an instant classic, best-selling author Randy Alcorn has compiled the most profound spiritual insights on the topic of eternity from these sermons and arranged them into an easily-accessible, highly inspirational devotional format complete with his own comments and devotional thoughts. Whether you are familiar with the works of Charles Spurgeon or not, you are in for a treat, as Alcorn invites you to sit at the feet of the Prince of Preachers and discover timeless pearls of wisdom from one of the greatest theological minds of all time.
It's such a blessing that modern media has converged with what would be, today, considered antiquity. You can, I believe, find all of Charles Spurgeon's sermons online, available for download, in their entirety from several sites. I even get a daily nugget on Facebook and Twitter. These morsels are more digestible than entire sermons, although those are certainly worthwhile on occasion.

Here, in We Shall See God (available here), Randy Alcorn has digested some of Spurgeon's best sermons on one of his (Alcorn's) favorite topics -- heaven. Fox News not 'fair and balanced' on ‘hooking up’

WORLDmag.com | Fox News on the virtues of ‘hooking up’: For those coeds interested in “hooking-up,” Fox News' sex therapist Ian Kerner recommends keeping it simple: “The whole point of casual sex is that it should require even less time and effort than that Pass/Fail Astronomy requirement you still need to take.” Naturally he advised students to “be safe.” But he didn’t point out that there is no such thing as safe sex, even with condoms. There was no mention of sexually transmitted diseases or the possibility of becoming pregnant.

Test can identify paternity 12 weeks into pregnancy

Test can identify paternity 12 weeks into pregnancy - health - 17 August 2011 - New Scientist: Has one of the most in-demand but controversial genetic tests finally been mastered? That's the claim of the DNA Diagnostics Center in Fairfield, Ohio, which this week launched a paternity test that can be run on a sample of a pregnant woman's blood.

The new test comes with a hefty price tag: $1625. But if it performs as advertised, it would free women who want to verify who is the father of their unborn child from the need to undergo invasive procedures to sample fetal cells that carry a small risk of triggering a miscarriage.

New Arizona Law Halts Abortions at 7 Planned Parenthood Clinics

New Arizona Law Halts Abortions at 7 Planned Parenthood Clinics :Operation Rescue: Because a court allowed 2009 safety standards law to go into effect, abortions will no longer be available at Planned Parenthood clinics in Prescott Valley, Flagstaff, Yuma, Goodyear, northeast Phoenix, and Chandler locations where non-physicians had been doing abortions by administering abortion pills. Romantic Sexual Relationships Deter Teenage Delinquency, New Study Shows

While policymakers and researchers commonly focus on the negative consequences of early intimacy, few studies probe into the contexts and potential benefits of teenage sexual relationships. This study showed that teenagers who are sexually active in dating relationships show lower levels of antisocial behavior compared to teenagers who are not having sex at all. However, teenagers who have sex with non-dating partners (“hooking up”) show higher levels of antisocial behavior compared to the other groups. These results may suggest that teens who spend more one-on-one time with their boyfriends or girlfriends, and less time with their friends, have fewer opportunities to get into trouble.

. . . To better understand what influences teenagers to have sex in dating relationships and with non-dating partners, the researchers examined environmental and genetic variables that predispose adolescents to risky sexual behaviors. Genes significantly influence sexual behavior among young teens (ages 13-15). Genes related to impulsivity, extroversion and early puberty may influence young adolescents to have sex in non-dating relationships. These same genes may also put them at risk for adverse psychological outcomes. However, older teens (ages 16-18) are more influenced to have non-romantic sex by environmental factors, such as coming from economically disadvantaged households, little parental involvement and poor school systems.

. . . A related study dispelled a commonly held theory that smart teens delay sex. They found family environmental factors, rather than intelligence, were more important influences on teenage sexual activity. U of Texas at Austin

Women's Clinic Group closes after protests, moves to Bloomfield Hills

Women's Clinic Group closes after protests, moves to Bloomfield Hills - theoaklandpress.com: After almost a year of anti-abortion activists rallying outside the Women's Clinic Group in Independence Township, abortion practitioner Dr. Theodore Roumell packed up his bags and moved the facility to Bloomfield Hills early this month.

Sharon Levin, Vice President and General Counsel of the National Abortion Federation, said this is the only time she has heard of a clinic moving after opposition.

“Many of our members have had to deal with harassment, threats and sometimes even violence,” said Levin. “Obviously, people have a First Amendment right to express their opinion. When people are simply expressing their opinion, it's not against the law. When they take the step to discourage people from seeking legal, constitutionally protected medical services, that is not okay.”

Soon after the clinic moved, the nonprofit group 40 Days for Life started praying in front of the new building, located at 43390 Woodward Ave. in Bloomfield Hills. The receptionist at Women’s Clinic Group declined comment.

Editor: She must be living under a rock if she's never heard of a clinic moving due to opposition.

Twins Reach Out to Each Other in Womb

Twins Reach Out to Each Other in Womb |: Researchers in Italy measured the movements made by twins toward each other, and found that these actions differed from incidental contact made with the uterine wall.

They made videos of five pairs of twins at age 14 and 18 weeks using four-dimensional ultrasound, according to PhysOrg.com. At 14 weeks, the twins touched each other head to head, arm to head, and head to arm. By 18 weeks, they made even more contact, “spending up to 30 percent of their time reaching out and stroking their co-twin.”

These movements are often characterized as simple reflexes, occurring with no actual direction by the babies. However, the Italian researchers’ measurements of contact between the twins found that they are actually planned movements. By 18 weeks, the twins’ movements towards each others’ eye and mouth regions showed marked differences from other motions, showing that they take a measure of care when touching delicate parts of their siblings’ bodies.

Parents beware: You can’t trust doctors with your kids

Parents beware: You can’t trust doctors with your kids | LifeSiteNews.com: Parents beware: A survey of ob/gyns conducted earlier this year found that 94 percent would provide contraceptives to a minor without notifying her parents. The study, conducted by researchers at Columbia University and the University of Chicago, is based on a survey of 1,800 ob/gyns, with a 66% response rate. It was published in the journal Contraception in January.

The doctors were presented with a hypothetical case of a 17-year-old college freshman who asks them for contraceptive pills but does not want her parents to know. Only 47% said they would encourage the minor to inform a parent, and only 54% would encourage the minor to remain abstinent until she is older.

Twin reduction abortions: Why do they trouble pro-choicers?

Twin reduction abortions: Why do they trouble pro-choicers? - By William Saletan - Slate Magazine: Reduction destroys this distinction [between embryos/fetuses and unborn children]. It combines, in a single pregnancy, a wanted and an unwanted fetus. In the case of identical twins, even their genomes are indistinguishable. You can't pretend that one is precious and the other is just tissue. You're killing the same creature to which you're dedicating your life.

That's the anguish of reduction: watching the fetus you spared become what its twin will never be. And knowing that the only difference between them was your will.

Page 2: Reducing Twins to Singles -- A Woman's Choice? - ABC News: After her own experience with unexpected multiples, Dr. Ross's concern lies not in the moral questionability of twin reductions, but in the psychological welfare of the couples. Though she did not opt to reduce her triplets, she says she has seen the psychological toll that reduction can take on parents.

'At the time you make the decision to reduce, parents don't know what the future will hold. Some of the families go on to experience a lot of grief. At every milestone for the child they decided to keep, there is this ghost in the room, this feeling that there should have been two of them,' she says. . . . 'We need to educate couples so that they know that if they are only willing to have one baby, they should only be transferring one embryo at a time.'

Abortion a factor in crime spree?

Muskegon Chronicle photographer, a sister of Dougherty gang member, saddened by his nationwide crime spree | MLive.com: The last time Kendra Stanley-Mills saw her adoptive brother, Dylan Dougherty Stanley, he was depressed, even distraught. Within a three-year span, he had had five family members die — a biological sister, his maternal biological grandparents, his adopted grandfather and his adopted father. But he was most upset because his pregnant girlfriend — a woman he loved — had an abortion. “He cried, and he cried, and he cried,” Stanley-Mills says.

About that time, he was arrested for possession of marijuana. He didn’t return phone calls. Always a hard worker, he quit his job — and even though Stanley-Mills is quick to say she does not know for sure, she suspects he started using drugs. He invited his biological brother and sister to live with him. The trio would become partners in a crime spree that ended last week.

These kinds of operations to correct spina bifida are more successful when conducted before the birth, according to a US study.

Texas Lawmakers Give Extra Support to Anti-Abortion Clinics

Day 14: Texas Lawmakers Give Extra Support to Anti-Abortion Clinics — 82nd Legislative Session | The Texas Tribune: The vast majority of faith-based crisis pregnancy resource centers in Texas go unregulated, but an estimated 26 are affiliated with the state, meaning they receive financial support and oversight from the Texas Pregnancy Care Network, a nonprofit charity organization that contracted with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission during the last biennium to distribute $4 million a year in state support to 47 crisis pregnancy centers, adoption agencies, social service agencies and maternity homes.

According to TPCN's website, an estimated 1,500 women seek their services each month and more than 40,000 clients have been served since the network was formed in 2006. For the next two years, lawmakers opted to add an additional $300,000 for a total budget of $8.3 million for its Alternatives to Abortion program.

On of the member centers is Austin LifeCare. ALC is supported by more than 40 different churches and receives 3 percent (around $45,000) of its annual funding from the state. Executive Director Pam Cobern said the money comes in the form of reimbursements for counseling time, some curriculum materials, and the students who attend classes. "It really doesn't have that much of an impact on us," she said, although aligning with TPCN has made theirs “a better, more professional center.”

As a condition, Austin LifeCare must divide their curriculum into spiritual and nonspiritual tracks. Under TPCN guidelines, “misleading a woman in crisis pregnancy about the scope of available services is neither compassionate or caring.” The state reviews phone protocols and advertisements. Graphic images are prohibited from being shown. Cobern said women who come to ALC are told they have three options. They can go through with their pregnancy, pursue adoption, or abort. ALC’s counselors do not coerce or lead the women. However, it is their standard policy to refer women to anti-abortion community health clinics that are not affiliated with Planned Parenthood.

No Combined Hormonal Contraceptives Early Post Partum

No Combined Hormonal Contraceptives Early PP: Regardless of their breastfeeding status, women who are less than 21 days post partum should not use combined hormonal contraception because of the high risk for venous thromboembolism. Previously, the guidelines recommended that women less than 21 days post partum “generally should not use combined hormonal contraceptives.” After 21 days, combined hormonal contraceptives could be used with no restrictions.

The revised guidelines now recommend that nonbreastfeeding women who are 21–42 days post partum and have other risk factors for venous thromboembolism generally not use combined hormonal contraceptives. These risk factors include age of 35 years or more, previous VTE, thrombophilia, immobility, transfusion at delivery, body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or more, postpartum hemorrhage, post–cesarean delivery, preeclampsia, or smoking. There are no restrictions for combined hormonal contraceptive use in women who are more than 42 days PP (MMWR 2011;60:878–83).

Updated Expose: Medical Research & Fetal Tissue

An assessment published in 1995 in The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that fetuses obtained from miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies were a “quite limited” source for fetal tissue, while another study published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research in 2001, the authors noted that out of 37 donated fetuses they used for their research, 33 had come from elective abortions. According to other journal articles, very little tissue comes from fetuses dying natural deaths.

. . . Jennifer Boulanger of the Allentown Women’s Center in Allentown, Pa., said her clinic supplies tissue to the University of Washington. She said her clinic is not paid for the donations, but the university provides her staff with the supplies needed to collect and ship the specimens.

. . . To ensure tissue freshness, “the specimens are FedExed overnight” to Seattle, she said. Boulanger didn’t have at hand the number of specimens her clinic provides annually, but she estimated, “I don’t think it’s any more than 10 a week.”

The recipient, named misleadingly the Birth Defects Research Laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for over four decades. It’s known within the research community as a top government distributor of fetal tissue. Last year the Puget Sound Business Journal stated the lab “in 2009 filled more than 4,400 requests for fetal tissue and cell lines.”

. . . Fetal remains also are in demand in Britain, where, similar to the United States, no formal stats on donations are kept. In a survey published three years ago, Julie Kent, a professor from the University of the West of England, found some surprising practices: At least one abortion clinic altered its termination method in order to preserve specimens, extracting the fetus with a syringe instead of a vacuum to avoid macerating the tissue.
