The real-life Vera Drakes not so saintly

The real-life Vera Drakes were not so saintly - Telegraph: The film Vera Drake was based on a study of imprisoned abortionists conducted from 1959 to 1962 that presented them as respectable women providing abortions out of the kindness of their hearts, who found themselves in prison as a result of their clients’ ingratitude. This picture was at odds with the evidence against them, and even with some of their own candid admissions. In fact, they did take money for their services, and their previous offences included larceny, prostitution, brothel-keeping, drunkenness and false pretenses.
