Center hosts LOL walk/run

Shared Pregnancy Women's Center in Lansing, MI, hosted a race/walk fundraiser last weekend. Director Saralee Howard described a unique twist that they surprised runners with when they showed up the day of the race: "When you registered you picked a tongue depressor out of a basket. On it was posted either a positve or negative pregnancy test result. Those who got positive tests ran with a special t-shirt with beach ball underneath." They awarded trophies for the Fastest Female Delivery and Fastest Male Delivery. Clever, huh?

Saralee went on to say, "If you didn't want to run pregnant, you had to find someone else to 'adopt' your baby. It was fun, but actually I'm not sure we do it again. A few of our runners are really serious and they certainly were not pleased at the idea, however, we made it optional and a dozen or so of our runners out of 98 ran pregnant." She has some good ideas for next year.

LOL stood for their theme Labor of Love, as well as "laugh out loud," which runners and spectators were sure to do when they saw the "pregnant" runners. The race was on Labor Day weekend, and the intent was to show "our love for getting women through pregnancy." Staff and volunteers dressed in scrubs. By incorporating a bridge run in the walk, the event was endorsed by the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and was a qualifying race for the 2010 Mackinac Bridge Run Lottery.
