One of the most difficult scenarios that occur at a nonprofit organization is to lose your tax-exempt status. Recently, the IRS published a list of over 275,000 organizations in the United States whose tax-exempt status was automatcially revoked because they did not file the IRS Form 990.
If you think your organization may have had their tax-exempt status automatically revoked, visit the IRS's Automatic Revocation of Exemption List.
For more information on automatic revocation for Nonprofits in the United States, including how to prevent revocation and what to do when your tax-exempt status is revoked see GuideStar's Resource Center on Automatic Revocation of Tax-Exempt Status and the National Council of Nonprofits' Tip Sheet on Revocation of Tax-Exempt Status.
