96,000 Women Needlessly Abort Over Medication Fears

Many Korean pregnant women make the hasty decision to have an abortion because of medication they were taking when they became pregnant. The practice is often based on unfounded fears that the medicine could lead to fetal deformities, says Dr. Kim Tae-yoon, head of the gynecological department of Miz Medi Hospital. "Though doctors assure them that most of the drugs are okay and recommend them to keep the baby, they just ask for the procedure," he said. Korea Times

14 Year Old British Girl Dies after HPV Vaccination

Natalie Morton died hours after being given Cervarix - the controversial cervical cancer vaccine manufactured for the UK market by Glaxo SmithKline. Natalie was injected with the vaccine as part of the UK National Health Service's immunization program directed at teenage girls with the purpose of protecting them against strains of the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease. The NHS started the HPV vaccination program in April last year and has recorded 2,137 reports of adverse effects. Health officials said today they are not sure whether Natalie had an extreme reaction to a standard vaccine, or whether the particular dose she was given was from a "rogue contaminated batch." Either situation raises serious questions about the safety of the vaccine. LifeSiteNews

HIV: The Biggest Threat to Pregnant Women

HIV is the leading cause of maternal mortality in South Africa, according to a five year study of maternal mortality at one of the country’s largest hospitals. Published in the August 2009 issue of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the study found that the maternal mortality ratio was more than six times higher in HIV-positive women than in HIV-negative women, and nearly half of the overall deaths were from HIV related causes, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia. Opposition to Health Care Plans Not Racist

A top black pro-life advocate says there is nothing racist about opposing the health care plans pending in Congress because they force taxpayers to finance abortions. Dr. Alveda King is responding to critics who say such opposition is racist and point to the outburst from Rep. Joe Wilson. King says abortion itself is racist because it targets the African-American community as abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood place centers in minority neighborhoods. LifeNews

Abortions Could Increase By One-Third Under Health Care Bills

Speaking at the Values Voters Summit sponsored by the Family Research Council, pro-life Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey made it abundantly clear what would happen under the current legislation. Smith predicted that abortions could rise by as much as one-third because of the massive abortion subsidies and mandates found in HR 3200 and the Kennedy and Baucus bills.

New H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccines Don't Rely on Aborted Fetal Cells

A pro-life group that monitors vaccinations is pleased to report that the new H1N1 swine flu vaccines the federal government will be distributing next month do not rely on cells from babies killed in abortions. Other vaccinations have been condemned for relying on such cells to formulate the vaccines. Children of God for Life says that four new H1N1 (swine flu) vaccines approved late last week by the FDA do not use aborted fetal cell lines. The four vaccines are made by Sanofi Pasteur, Novartis, CSL and Medimmune and all are using eggs from baby chickens instead of cells from humans. LifeNews

Good News from AUL's 2009 State Legislative Sessions in Review

Despite Congress and the Obama Administration’s pursuit of an incremental strategy to implement a regime of unregulated and unrestricted abortion-on-demand, fund unethical and destructive biotechnologies, and coerce and undermine the consciences of health care providers, the majority of states continue their pursuit of life-affirming laws and policies. In 2009, approximately 60 pro-life measures were enacted in the states, a marked increase from 2008. This accomplishment is especially notable given that there was a nearly one-third decline in the number of pro-life measures introduced in the states in 2009 (as compared to 2008 activity levels). PolitiFact Half Wrong on Abortion Funding in Baucus Bill

PolitiFact, the web site fact-checks politicians and political issues, got it right when it validated a pro-life group's analysis that abortion funding is found in the Baucus health care bill. But it got wrong its assessment of National Right to Life's description of the kind of money involved. PolitiFact confirmed that NRLC is right on abortion funding. But PolitiFact declared wrong an NRLC statement saying, "Under the Baucus bill...federal funds would subsidize coverage of elective abortions." PolitiFact reached these seemingly contradictory conclusions by making the odd claim that the federal government can use federal funds to help purchase private health insurance plans that cover elective abortions, and yet not "subsidize coverage of elective abortions." Kenya decries high abortion rate

As the world marks the 3rd World Contraceptive Day on Saturday, inadequate use of contraceptives associated with high rates of abortions and birth rates remained a major concern among reproductive health experts in Kenya. Departmental Head of Family Health in the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation Dr. Josephine Kibaru said there were 300,000 abortions every year in public health centres alone. “Our study shows that the number of abortions in this country is so high, this was done only in public facilities which mean that this is just a tip of the iceberg." Answer to global warming? Forced abortion and sterilization

In Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment, Obama science czar John Holdren argued that involuntary birth-control measures, including forced sterilization, may be necessary and morally acceptable under extreme conditions, such as widespread famine brought about by "climate change." Second Abortion Increases Risk of Premature Babies 93%

Published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Canadian researchers found that women who had undergone more than one abortion had a 72 per cent increased risk for low birth weight and 93 per cent risk of prematurity. Far from recommending that women not have abortions, however, the lead author of the study said that the solution is to improve abortion techniques. Shah told media that he was fearful that "anti-abortion groups" would seize upon the study as proof of the damage abortion does to women. "I think it should not be used as a way of saying, this is bad and we should not be doing this kind of thing. There is an association which we should be aware of, and we should let mothers be aware. I don't want unintended pregnancies to increase." LifeSiteNews

48% Want Abortion Coverage Banned in Health Care Plan

The health care reform legislation working its way through Congress faces many obstacles primarily because it touches so many aspects of life. The abortion issue has the potential to create a lose-lose situation for advocates of the plan. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% believe any government-subsidized health care plan should be prohibited from covering abortion procedures. Thirteen percent (13%) believe such plans should be required to cover abortions, and 32% favor a more neutral approach with no requirements in either direction.

Aborted fetal DNA in vaccines linked to autism?

Just when the pharmaceutical industry thought the vaccine/autism controversy had been resolved, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee has recommended further study of vaccine safety. A perceived fear of the safety of the US vaccination schedule has led increasing numbers of parents to opt out of full compliance. . . . What the NVAC has overlooked, however, in their recommendations, is that epidemic regressive autism is associated with the switch from using animal cells to produce vaccines to the use of aborted human fetal cells for vaccine production. Now when we vaccinate our children, some vaccines also deliver contaminating aborted human fetal DNA. The safety of this has never been tested. Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute

In Health Care Battle, a Truce on Abortion

“And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up: Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortion, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.” Did that apparently unqualified statement by President Obama to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday guarantee that health care overhaul, whatever its other travails, will not fall victim to the seemingly intractable moral battle over abortion? Study Showing Abortion-Premature Birth Risk Points to Cerebral Palsy

The new meta-study shows "very strong evidence [that] the most common induced abortion procedure, 'suction' abortion" has a "risk of a later preterm birth or the low birth weight baby." The cerebral palsy link is important because "babies under 32 weeks' gestation have 55 times the cerebral palsy risk as full-term (at least 37 weeks) newborns." As a result, if abortions increase the risk of a low birth-weight baby and low birth-weigh significantly contributes to an unborn child having cerebral palsy, then the performance of abortions clearly results in more children diagnosed with the condition. Epidemiologist: Pope Is Right About Condoms

René Ecochard, director of the biostatistics department at Lyon's University Hospital Center, explained that there is "a lack of realism" on the condom issue, which he called a "prisoner of ideology." Pope Benedict XVI said en route to Africa on March 17 that the "problem of AIDS cannot be overcome merely with money, necessary though it is. If there is no human dimension, if Africans do not help [by responsible behavior], the problem cannot be overcome by the distribution of prophylactics: on the contrary, they increase it." The doctor explained: "People thought that the Pope was speaking of the efficacy of the plastic, the condom, when in reality he was speaking of the campaigns to spread the condom. This is very different. All epidemiologists agree today that the campaigns to distribute [condoms] in countries where the proportion of affected people is very high, do not work." Zenit

The Blackmun Myth

Women who have just one abortion face 35% increased risk of having a premature baby

A Canadian medical study found that those who abort a pregnancy could run the risk of giving birth to premature of low-weight children in subsequent pregnancies. It discovered that women who had undergone more than one abortion had a 72 percent increased risk for low birth weight and 93 percent risk of prematurity. It also found that women who had an abortion in the first or second trimester had a 35 percent increased risk of giving birth to a low-weight birth baby and a 36 percent increased risk of having a premature baby.

The authors of the review, published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, say there could be several reasons for their findings - the most likely of which is physical damage to the cervix caused by older methods of abortion. 'When a woman comes for induced termination of pregnancy, she should be counselled about that risk. At least she will be able to make an informed choice. Daily Mail, Guardian

"There certainly is public funding for abortion" in the House bill, says Stupak. If Nancy Pelosi and Rules Committee chairman Louise Slaughter do not allow an up-or-down vote on his amendment to explicitly ban coverage for elective abortions in the bill, Stupak's going to lead a coalition of Democrats to vote with the Republicans "to try to take down the rule." That would keep the bill from moving out of the committee to the floor. Weekly Standard

FDA Panel Backs Cancer Vaccines

A Food and Drug Administration panel Wednesday backed a vaccine designed to protect against cervical cancer in women and endorsed expanded use of Gardasil for males to protect against genital warts. The vote amounts to a recommendation that the FDA approve the vaccine for use in females ages 10 to 25. The FDA usually follows its panels' advice but isn't required to do so. The agency could make a decision by Sept. 29. Cervarix is currently approved in about 100 countries outside the U.S. Merck is seeking FDA approval to expand Gardasil's use in males ages 9 to 26. Center hosts LOL walk/run

Shared Pregnancy Women's Center in Lansing, MI, hosted a race/walk fundraiser last weekend. Director Saralee Howard described a unique twist that they surprised runners with when they showed up the day of the race: "When you registered you picked a tongue depressor out of a basket. On it was posted either a positve or negative pregnancy test result. Those who got positive tests ran with a special t-shirt with beach ball underneath." They awarded trophies for the Fastest Female Delivery and Fastest Male Delivery. Clever, huh?

Saralee went on to say, "If you didn't want to run pregnant, you had to find someone else to 'adopt' your baby. It was fun, but actually I'm not sure we do it again. A few of our runners are really serious and they certainly were not pleased at the idea, however, we made it optional and a dozen or so of our runners out of 98 ran pregnant." She has some good ideas for next year.

LOL stood for their theme Labor of Love, as well as "laugh out loud," which runners and spectators were sure to do when they saw the "pregnant" runners. The race was on Labor Day weekend, and the intent was to show "our love for getting women through pregnancy." Staff and volunteers dressed in scrubs. By incorporating a bridge run in the walk, the event was endorsed by the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and was a qualifying race for the 2010 Mackinac Bridge Run Lottery. What Do Abortion Advocates Have Against the Human Body

What’s to fear from fetal models? The fact is, they're effective. It’s hard to argue that abortion simply destroys a blob of tissue, when you see an image of a being with eyes staring back at you. It’s difficult to claim that the fetus is a non-person, when a model of that entity looks a great deal like yourself at a younger and more innocent age. LifeNews

Laura died on the wrong side of Kennedy's Politics

Eileen Smith raised her family near the medical mecca of the world (Boston) with a false sense of security. Surely all our medical needs would be taken care of with the latest of technologies and the best of the best of doctors. On her blog she writes, "Never in my worst nightmare could I have imagined my daughter would die at the hands of a Harvard Fellow practicing worse than 3rd world medicine. My daughter, Laura Hope Smith, died in a doctor's office in Hyannis, MA, on September 13th, 2007, just blocks from the well known Kennedy compound. Laura died from the same drug, Propofol, that killed Michael Jackson, and for the same reasons: carelessness, criminal negligence and recklessness." Yet, where was the media attention? Why, when she appealed to Senator Kennedy for help, did he not listen? The Laura Hope Smith Story

OBAMA PERPETUATES ABORTION FUNDING MYTH IN JOINT SESSION ADDRESS

In his address to a joint session of Congress tonight, President Obama said, "One more misunderstanding I want to clear up -- under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions." Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, commented: "Barack Obama needs to learn that the mere repetition of a verbal formula does not change reality. The reality is that the Obama-backed House bill would explicitly authorize the federal government insurance plan to pay for elective abortions and would explicitly authorize subsidies for private abortion insurance -- and all with federal dollars, which are the only kind of dollars that the federal government can spend." Abortion issue could thwart Obama's health reform goals

As President Barack Obama prepares to address Congress on health care reform, America's pro-life movement is gassing up. If Mr. Obama hasn't liked the tenor of town-hall meetings, wait until he meets pro-lifers at full throttle. They're planning a major drive to try to stop federal funding of abortion as allowed under proposed health care legislation. Mr. Obama has partly invited this havoc by not being completely forthright about how health care reform, as currently proposed, would provide taxpayer funding for abortion. Baltimore Sun

Spanish abortion reforms offer least protection for unborn in Europe

In other European countries, the law clearly spells out the State’s duty to protect basic rights, but the proposed Spanish law would be in stark contrast, denying women information and leaving the unborn without protection. Catholic News Agency

Bereaved mother campaigns against medical guidelines that allow premature babies to die

A mother whose prematurely-born boy died after being denied treatment has condemned guidelines given to doctors. Jayden was denied treatment because he was born earlier than 22 weeks, the cut-off point for treatment under the guidelines. His mother claimed that doctors told her that Jayden "hasn't got a human right, he is a foetus." She went on to say, "The doctors say the babies won't survive, but how do they know if they aren't giving them a chance?" Telegraph

National Right to Life on the health care debate

Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee says, "The health care legislation being pushed forward by President Obama would create a federally run insurance plan that would pay for elective abortion with government funds. The legislation also would provide massive tax-based subsidies to purchase private insurance plans that would cover elective abortions. Both of these new programs would represent drastic breaks with decades of federal policy against funding abortions in government-subsidized health programs. On government-funded abortion, Obama has duped the news media with head fakes and doubletalk."

Read two new memoranda from NRLC refuting "the Hyde Amendment myth" and "the private funds myth."

Abortion, Hormonal Contraceptives Influence Breast Cancer Risk

A paper published this week in the journal, The Linacre Quarterly, by Angela Lanfranchi, MD shows how different pregnancy outcomes influence breast cancer risk. According to Lanfranchi, 52 years of research has pointed to the fact that abortion, as well as hormonal contraceptives, can significantly increase the risk of breast cancer. Paris Pushes Abortion Pill

Concerned about abortion access in the city of Paris, the Mayor's office presented an action plan last week that involves offering chemical abortions without hospitalization in five 'planning centres' or abortuaries around the city. The chemical abortions will be available up to five weeks, and the City hopes that it will make it easier for women to get abortions. Sérénade Chafik of France's Planned Parenthood spoke of abortion access as an "obstacle course. The law is not applied. After eight weeks of pregnancy, it becomes difficult to find a doctor willing to perform abortions." Currently, French law allows abortion-on-demand until the 12th week after which they can be performed in exceptional cases with the approval of two doctors. Planned Parenthood contends that every year between 3,000 and 5,000 go abroad to get abortions. LifeSiteNews

New Attack on the Unborn in Latin America

The International Planned Parenthood Federation and its allies have decided to ignore existing laws protecting the sanctity of life and set up abortion hot-lines to encourage women to abort themselves. Women who call these hot-lines are told about the abortifacient drug, misoprostol. They are briefed on how they can obtain it, and how they can use it to abort themselves. Over the past four months, abortion-minded groups in Ecuador, Chile and Argentina have set up such abortion hot-lines. LifeSiteNews

Narcissism rules and chaos reigns. Or, does it? "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?" asks God of Job. "Tell me, if you have understanding" (Job 38:4). U.N. sex-ed guidance draws fire

A U.N. agency is backing away from U.N.-proposed guidelines intended to reduce HIV infections through sex education for young people, officials in Paris said. Responding to criticism by conservative groups, the United Nations Population Fund has requested its name be removed from published materials associated with the guidelines, set for release in draft form next week by UNESCO. Critics say the program content is too strong for children and that it portrays access to legal abortion as a right. UPI

All women urged to take folic acid 'just in case'

Most women take folic acid pills once they already realise they are pregnant which can often be too late to prevent spina bifida. Now experts have warned that all women of childbearing age should take folic acid supplements to prevent any children they have being born with spina bifida. The advice comes after a rise in the number of cases of the disability. Daily Mail

Shotgun adoption

This article is critical of adoption agencies and pregnancy care centers. While we can't be certain the circumstances related in it are accurate, it does serve as a warning. The Nation

Editor: Centers associated with Partners in Ministry/Baptists for Life adhere to standards of operation that say, concerning adoption:

"Adoption is recognized as one viable alternative to abortion. Agencies which provide assistance in placing children for adoption are to be commended and Partners in Ministry and its associates will work cooperatively with such agencies whenever possible. However, the PCC is not biased in favor of, or in opposition to, adoption. The PCC will remain independent of adoption agencies, relating to them in the same manner as to other referral agencies. The PCC will receive no payment from adoption agencies, will not enter into contractual relationships with them, nor be established under the auspices of such agencies."

It's also important to note that the author is critical of large, Christian families, such as the one written about here: Family Attacked for Too Many Children: "Thrilled" about Baby 19.

1 in 6 girls pressured into sex by boyfriend

Young girls are being physically abused and pressured into sex by their boyfriends, according to new research. Nearly nine in ten girls aged 13 to 17 have been involved in an “intimate” relationship, according to a survey of 1,353 young people carried out by the NSPCC and Bristol University. Of those girls, one in six reported being pressured into having sex, while one in 16 said they had been raped. Girls with older boyfriends were most at risk, with three quarters reporting abuse. Many kept quiet about the situation because they felt scared or guilty, or feared they would lose their boyfriend. Christian Institute, Guardian

Reflection on prayer, from Colleen Tronson

"Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and I will answer thee and show thee great and might things, which thou knowest not." Jeremiah 33:3

"Be careful for nothing: but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

My husband calls Jeremiah 33:3 "God's Phone Number." I love that because there are times in life and ministry when I am searching for discernment for a personal or counseling situation that is very complex or "messy" and I start to think (in my humanness) that there is no answer. Then I remember this verse and WOW-Call on the Lord; He has the answer! In the flesh I can't solve the problem and I can't see the end of the situation right now, but an answer will come and in His time.

Philippians 4:6-7 then reminds me to PRAY and ASK for direction for myself and the situation. God promises that His PEACE will keep me from worry and unbelief and I don't have to "stress" out about any situation. I have a sign on my computer that says, "Good Morning, This is God. I will be handling all of your problems today. I will not need your help." I don't know if this happens to anyone else or not, but I am thankful that God keeps reminding me that He's in charge and that my job is to pray, apply the Word, and wait on His timing.

Abortion Stigma Affects Doctors' Training And Choices

When Devin Miller, leader of the abortion rights group Medical Students for Choice at Virginia Commonwealth University, heard about the slaying of George Tiller, she "took a step back" to ponder her future. The second-year student plans to become an obstetrician-gynecologist or family physician and expects she would sometimes terminate pregnancies. But the May 31 death of Tiller has left the 23-year-old deeply shaken. Thirty-six years after it was legalized, abortion remains one of the most common procedures in American medicine -- and the most stigmatized. In 2005, 1.2 million abortions were performed, dwarfing the number of appendectomies (341,000), gallbladder removals (398,000) and hysterectomies (575,000). "There's this feeling it's dirty and should not be spoken about," said Miller. "It's hard to be brave and seek everything out yourself." Washington Post

Planned Parenthood Boasts of White House Ties

"Just left the White House meeting on women's health care - they appreciate all the mighty PP supporters speaking up for reform in the states!" wrote Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards on her Facebook and Twitter accounts Wednesday afternoon. White House Reality Check Site Still Silent on Abortion

Since launching three weeks ago, the White House Reality Check website on healthcare reform has been updated several times to debunk a growing number of alleged myths about the Democrats' plan. But the site is still silent on conservatives' charge that the plan will use taxpayer money to cover abortions. It's a stunning omission, given how much the government-funded abortion allegation has dominated this month's congressional town hall meetings on healthcare reform—and given that President Obama himself has called the charge a myth. Why does the White House site ignore such a big elephant in the room? US News

Pro-life calendar used to great effect

In 2007, South Carolina Citizens for Life sent every member of their State General Assembly a 2008 Life Before Birth calendar with a Christmas card. "The purpose was to encourage our lawmakers to pass legislation requiring abortionists to inform pregnant women they have the right to see the baby's ultrasound before the abortion." The abortion-ultrasound bill became law in 2008. SCCL believes the calendar contributed to the success of the legislation. Heritage House '76
