Tea Party Avoids Divisive Social Issues

For decades, faith and family have been at the center of the conservative movement. But as the Tea Party infuses conservatism with new energy, its leaders deliberately avoid discussion of issues like gay marriage or abortion. NY Times

A sampling of a Contract From America discussion bears this out: "[U]nless the Tea Party demonstrates a commitment to keeping the federal government out of peoples’ lives socially (on issues from gay marriage to abortion), the Tea Party is not going to gain trust amongst a large populace which can help promote their agenda. The Tea Party . . . is getting shanghaied by Republicans – including members of the Religious Right. . . . If you want to expand your support base, you must demonstrate a commitment to small federal government across the board, not just financially."

Another member replied: "I’m conservative on social issues, but for the short run I’m willing to put those things that divide us aside in order to save this country from total economic disaster. . . . Can we work together for a time for the good of the country as a whole? I think a lot of the so-called religious right will be willing to do so for a time."

Hmmmmm. Shall we sacrifice the unborn for our bottom line?
