The new Planned Parenthood center, scheduled to open March 8, should be a busy place. Statistics from Public Health-Muskegon County show the county's rates for teen pregnancy and chlamydia are well above the state averages. PP of West and Northern Michigan will offer a range of family planning services, including annual exams, reproductive cancer screenings, and birth control supplies and information.
The county health department is required by law to make the services available. Local health officials were concerned about the expense they would incur if they had to operate it themselves. "We're relieved to have the public health department's obligation fulfilled," said Ken Kraus, director of Public Health-Muskegon County. "Our department would need additional staff and resources to provide family planning services on our own. We're very grateful with Planned Parenthood's decision to provide the services in Muskegon County again." mLive
