Obama Admin Targets Pro-Lifers in FBI Training Forum With Pro-Abortion Orgs

Obama Admin Targets Pro-Lifers in FBI Training Forum With Pro-Abortion Orgs: Documents obtained today reveal the Obama administration partnered with leading pro-abortion organizations to host an FBI training seminar in August with the main focus of declaring as 'violent' the free speech activities of pro-life Americans.

On August 25, 2010, the FBI and the US Department of Justice co-sponsored a training seminar with Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation and the Feminist Majority Foundation.

FBI and Obama administration officials provided participants with an 84-page document entitled “Resource Guide: Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers' that contained print copies of Power point presentations prepared by the Justice Department an analysis of alleged pro-life 'violence' prepared by the pro-abortion groups.

The so-called violence perpetrated by pro-life advocates mostly contained examples of constitutionally-protected free speech, including activities such as praying, providing women outside abortion centers with alternatives information, and peaceful protesting or picketing. Matt Bowman, a top attorney at the Alliance Defense Fund, said today that the cooperation between the Obama administration and pro-abortion organizations to target pro-life free speech should cause alarm.

N.J. doctor denies charges of performing illegal abortions

N.J. doctor denies charges of performing illegal abortions | NJ.com: Fighting to keep his medical license, abortion doctor Steven Brigham today denied in legal papers that he tried to evade state law by administering pregnancy-ending drugs to patients before leading them by caravan to a Maryland clinic for the surgical procedure.

RU486: Planned Parenthood's cash cow

A July 2009 Planned Parenthood study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that in 2008, a total of 96,738 medical (abortion pill) abortions were committed by Planned Parenthood in the U.S., representing 32% of first-trimester abortions in Planned Parenthood facilities. Planned Parenthood's website reports that an abortion-pill abortion costs between $350 to $650, so at an average cost of $500 per abortion, that means Planned Parenthood took in over $48 million in 2008 from abortions by pill. Wednesday STOPP Report, 9/29/10

Facility Closes in Maryland Run by Man Who Killed Woman in Botched Abortion

Facility Closes in Maryland Run by Man Who Killed Woman in Botched Abortion: It's official. The Gynecare Center run by embattled abortion practitioner Romeo A. Ferrer, who has been under fire involving a case of a woman he killed in a failed abortion, has closed. Two pro-life groups have confirmed that a replacement abortion practitioner will not do abortions in Ferrer's stead. Ferrer is closing his abortion center after a 10-year campaign from dedicated pro-life organizations. The Maryland Board of Physicians suspended his medical license but pro-life advocates were hoping for more.

"Receptionist" vs. "Director of First Brand Impressions"

"Receptionist" vs. "Director of First Brand Impressions": In my years of calling hundreds of organizations and dealing with countless 'phone receptionists,' I've often been given bad information, talked to as if I were an imposition rather than a valued caller, put on interminable hold, felt like I had just woken the person up, or been treated downright rudely. Heck, sometimes I don't even get past the receptionist and I'm already questioning whether or not I want to do business with this group.

Take the test yourself. Call your own organization, and then ask, 'Was I received in a way that would make me want to call this organization again?' What's it take to turn a 'receptionist' into an effective 'Director of First Impressions'?

RU486 used in 20% of U.S. terminations

RU-486 used in 20% of U.S. terminations - UPI.com: The abortion pill mifepristone, previously known as RU-486, is used in 20 percent of U.S. pregnancy terminations, researchers say. However, when mifepristone was approved and put on the market 10 years ago, it was expected to change the way abortions were obtained in the United States.

'We haven't seen as much expansion in terms of where one can obtain it as we thought we might,' Lawrence Finer, director of domestic research at the Guttmacher Institute.
'Mifepristone has not brought a major improvement in the geographic availability of abortion.'

Why Do Women Love Jerks ?

Why Women Love Jerks : Girls Gone Wise: Because jerks – men who Proverbs calls a fool – do and say things to establish an emotional bond quickly, before their true nature is known. They make emotional promises that are not theirs to keep and in doing so sweep women with unguarded hearts off their feet. And once the emotional connection is there, very little can make a woman leave a fool… because she loves him.

Just because there have been fools in your past does not mean there cannot be a wise man in your future. But you must cut off ties with fools and surround yourself with wise, godly people. Because “whoever walks with the wise becomes wise.” (Prov. 13:20)

“A woman’s heart should be so hidden in God that a man has to seek Him just to find her.”

Quietly racking up the abortion toll

DILLER & WALKER: Quietly racking up the abortion toll - Washington Times: While Planned Parenthood continues to sit on its annual report for 2008-2009, new documents found hidden on its labyrinthine website give taxpayers an insider's look into the beleaguered abortion monopoly it is helping fund.
The numbers paint the grisly picture of an organization beset by financial problems yet determined to increase income by killing more preborn human beings.

But that's not the surprising part. The shocking thing about these numbers is that they are finally dispelling the ubiquitous Planned Parenthood lie that the organization is about something other than abortion.

TX AG rules on abortion clinic practices

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued two opinions regarding the practice of abortion in Texas that significantly increase protections for the health and safety of women. In response to requests for opinions, Abbott ruled that abortion facilities that perform medical abortions (using chemicals such as using RU 486 instead of surgical methods), must obtain an abortion facility license. Abbott also ruled that abortion facilities may not use a prerecorded telephone message to furnish information the law requires an abortion doctor to provide “orally by telephone or in person" to a woman 24 hours before the abortion, including the medical risks of the abortion.

New Initiative Offers Help to Girls Facing Pressure to Abort

New Initiative Offers Help to Girls Facing Pressure to Abort: Pregnant teens often face pressure to undergo an abortion from parents or others - but a new resource soon to be distributed around the country will offer such young women hope and legal recourse in a seemingly hopeless situation.

A project of the Justice Foundation, the Center Against Forced Abortions, hopes to put an end to forced abortion by empowering young women with their legal rights. CAFA has already found success saving lives by offering young women a letter drafted by Justice Foundation attorneys that outlines to parents the legal rights of their daughters to carry their child to term.

There’s some overlap here, and even an occasional contradiction, but each has something to add. And, thankfully, they’re brief.

One of the best suggestions for an abstinence education setting is to have students write out their questions and hand them in.

Michigan community center ends Planned Parenthood lease

Right to Life of Michigan's Blog: Michigan community center ends Planned Parenthood lease: Last week, the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency board of directors voted 3-3 to end a lease which allowed Planned Parenthood of South Central Michigan to use its buildings. In tie votes, motions are denied so the motion to renew the lease was denied. The 7th member of the board would have voted against the renewal as well.

Cascading effect of bad news for abortionists

Abortion Clinic Closed For Good After Ferrer’s Replacement Quits :Operation Rescue: Abortionist Romeo Ferrer, 69, whose medical license was suspended by the Maryland Board of Physicans earlier this month, has closed his Gynecare Center abortion clinic after his replacement abortionist suddenly quit last week.

Abortionist Ghevont Wartanian had been hired to fill in for Ferrer during his suspension. Due to recent publicity surrounding Ferrer’s troubles and an unrelated illegal late-term abortion scheme operated by notorious abortionist Stephen C. Brigham, Wartanian had expressed reluctance to do abortions at Ferrer’s troubled clinic beyond September 30.

Arkansas Abortionist Harrison Dead From Leukemia

Arkansas Abortionist Harrison Dead From Leukemia :Operation Rescue: Arkansas abortionist William Harrison, 75, died on Friday, September 24, 2010, after a four-month bout with leukemia. He closed his Fayetteville abortion clinic on July 30. He boasted of having done over 20,000 abortions and acknowledged, “I am destroying life.” Known to mock Christians as they prayed for him outside his abortion clinic, he called his post-operative patients “born again.” Thankfully, there is no one to take his place, and today Northwest Arkansas remains abortion-free.

Michigan abortion statistics

What does it mean that, in Michigan, only 2% of abortion referrals are made by "family planning agencies" and 78% of abortions are performed in physician's private offices? (Most abortions are self-referred and only 21% are in abortion clinics.) Is our focus on Planned Parenthood and free-standing abortion clinics misplaced? Anti-abortion female Republican candidates could change political equation in Senate

An unusually large contingent of female Republican candidates with strong anti-abortion views is heating up debate on the issue and could change the political equation in the next Congress. In California, Nevada, Delaware and New Hampshire, the GOP nominees for seats in the U.S. Senate are women who favor outlawing most abortions. A win by any one of them would fill a void. All 17 women now in the Senate, including four Republicans, support relatively broad abortion rights. Star Tribune

Abortionist Riley Did Federal Prison Time

Brigham Abortionist Riley Did Federal Prison Time, Records Show :Operation Rescue: Documents that show abortionist Nicola Riley, an employee of the notorious Stephen Chase Brigham, has a history of criminal problems that earned her a year at the U.S. Military Prison at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Army.

In June, 1991, two soldiers under her command were convicted of credit card fraud and criminal impersonation. Riley admits she knew about the criminal activity, but did not report it in a timely manner. The delay was long enough for authorities to charge as an accessory, but it is unclear just how deeply she was actually involved in the scam. Riley pled “no contest” and was sentenced to serve one year at the Ft. Leavenworth military prison after which she received a dishonorable discharge from the Army.

NJ abortion doctor accused of more violations

NJ abortion doctor accused of more violations | nj.com: Dr. Steven Brigham, the New Jersey doctor cited by medical authorities for shuttling his patients to Maryland for late-term abortions, is now accused of violating standards of care for two additional patients, including a woman from Canada whose nearly full-term fetus with Down syndrome was aborted.

The procedure on the Canadian patient "seriously violated medical standard of care and, to my knowledge, is not sanctioned by any statute or regulation," Dr. Gary Brickner wrote in an expert opinion to the medical board. He noted that the woman's pregnancy "did not involve a fetus with a lethal defect or a condition dangerous to the mother's health."

"How Can I Help You? Would You Like to Talk?"

Care Net | "How Can I Help You? Abortion does not further children's health

Chris Smith - Abortion does not further children's health: Abortion is, by definition, infant mortality, and it undermines the achievement of the fourth Millennium Development Goal. There is nothing benign or compassionate about procedures that dismember, poison, induce premature labor or starve a child to death. Indeed, the misleading term 'safe abortion' misses the point that no abortion -- legal or illegal -- is safe for the child and that all are fraught with negative health consequences, including emotional and psychological damage, for the mother.

Legal Does Not Always Mean Safe

FRC Blog Legal Abortion Does Not Always Equal Safe Abortion: Even in the U.S., women still die from botched abortions. While abortion proponents often use the rhetoric that a legal abortion equals safe abortion, in reality a number of woman have died or been injured from botched abortions in the last few months.

Pro-Life Groups Applaud GOP Pledge Against Tax-Funded Abortions

Pro-Life Groups Applaud GOP Pledge Against Tax-Funded Abortions, ObamaCare: House Republican leaders unveiled their new Pledge to America document today that contains a promise to push for a permanent ban on federal funding of abortions should voters replace the pro-abortion Democrats who currently control Congress with GOP lawmakers. The legislation referred to is the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 5939), an NRLC-backed bill introduced by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) on July 29, which already has 175 co-sponsors.

Kristan Hawkins, director of Students for Life of America, said the document shows there doesn't have to be a "truce" or compromise between social and fiscal issues.

Pro-life Memorial Day - 2010

Pro-life Memorial Day - 2010: Since the U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade and Doe v. This is a day on which pro-lifers across the nation will mourn the victims of America's hidden holocaust: abortion. Who will hear the cries of these preborn children? Who will be their voice?

NJ family planning clinic closed after cutbacks

NJ family planning clinic closed after cutbacks | APP.com | Asbury Park Press: Cuts in state funding have led Planned Parenthood of Southern New Jersey to close a family planning clinic in Cherry Hill. Chris Christie's veto of a bill that would have provided $7.5 million for 58 clinics around the state.

Man hired men to punch pregnant girlfriend | abc7.com: A 22-year-old man from Oxnard, CA, is facing 25 years to life in prison for paying two men $500 to stage a robbery and punch his pregnant girlfriend so she would have a miscarriage. A Ventura County Superior Court Judge found Jaime Solis Olmos guilty on Monday of one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of attempted murder. Olmos reportedly did not want to support a child or his girlfriend Justina Cornejo after she told him she would not get an abortion.

Abortionist Whitney arrested; held without bond

Abortionist Whitney arrested on warrant; held without bond: On the first day of the massive 13-city Florida campaign of 40 Days for Life, Orlando-area prolife activists discovered an outstanding bench warrant from September 10 against notorious abortionist Randall Brooks Whitney.

While doing abortions for four-time suspended Florida abortionist James Pendergraft, Whitney was arrested in March for slapping a customer of Orlando Women’s Center and charged with felony battery. After pleading not guilty, Whitney failed to show up for trial. He continued to kill babies.

After dark on Wednesday, activists were notified of the warrant and confirmed that Whitney was inside the clinic. They contacted Orlando Police. Four officers surrounded the building while Whitney claimed he was in the “middle of surgery” and that they were superseding legal authority by removing a doctor from his patient. Police didn’t buy Whitney’s story and arrested him while he was still in surgical scrubs.

Ministering to a unique group of post-abortive women

Pregnancy termination for medical indications is a very complex issue that leaves women and their families confused by their feelings and unable to find support for their situations. If they are offered any type of support immediately after the termination, it is usually in the form of a pregnancy loss support group. However, a woman who has opted to terminate her pregnancy will typically feel uncomfortable with the notion of sharing her story with women whose babies have died of natural causes. In the unlikely event they seek out a typical post-abortion program, it is not always a comfortable fit and may not be effective.

Recognizing and Dealing With 'Fake Clients'

Recognizing and Dealing With 'Fake Clients': Since the early 1980s, the abortion industry has consistently attacked the work of pregnancy resource centers. Charges of being deceptive and misleading have been leveled at PRCs all over the country, and those working hand-in-hand with the abortion industry have filed numerous lawsuits with the express goal of closing down allegedly 'fake' clinics. How should centers deal with fake clients?

The district attorney's office will seek the death penalty in the stabbing death of 34-year-old Kimberly Lewis and her 4-month-old fetus. Because of a change in Alabama law in 2006, the fatal stabbing quali fies as capital murder because two people were killed as a re sult of the stabbing.

Negative Psychological Impact of Abortion Results from 'Hard-Wiring' in Women's Brains

Negative Psychological Impact of Abortion Results from 'Hard-Wiring' in Women's Brains: Scholars: In an article published in the September 20 issue of Public Discourse, Evelyn and Paul Vitz relate spending a semester with students studying the stories of women who shared their experiences after an abortion. The authors found that 'many of these women are in acute pain; some are almost totally incapacitated' by their post-abortion feelings.

'What is particularly striking is that most of the women who have these powerful emotional reactions to their abortion are stunned by them. They were not opposed to abortion; many were actively pro-choice. They were blind-sided by their own reaction. One woman lamented—and thousands of others echo her mystified anguish—‘If this was the right decision, why do I feel so terrible?’”

Brigham behind secretive late-term abortion clinic

Brigham behind secretive late-term abortion clinic | Philadelphia Inquirer | 09/21/2010: For more than a year online, 'Grace Medical Care' has advertised abortions up to the last few weeks of pregnancy. It said it's located in a Philadelphia suburb, yet kept the address secret. And it has operated without the knowledge of state regulatory authorities. Now, for the first time, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office says the person behind the clandestine enterprise is Steven Chase Brigham, the physician being investigated by New Jersey and Maryland on suspicion of licensing and criminal offenses.

New Jersey is also looking into why state agencies that oversee businesses and medical facilities have no records for Grace Medical. Grace Medical remained a mystery even to doctors recruited by Brigham over the last year to work in Elkton, transcripts of interviews with investigators show.

Editor: An abortion clinic called Grace. This beats all.

Maternal mortality figures debunked

AAPLOG President, Donna Harrison, spoke Wednesday Sept 15 at a member briefing of the United Nations on the subject of maternal mortality. The topic was a rational approach to decreasing maternal mortality worldwide.

A recent Lancet study demonstrated clearly that maternal mortality has declined significantly since l990, without worldwide legalization of abortion. The decline would have been even greater if not for the maternal mortality caused by the HIV epidemic.

Dr. Harrison commented on the faulty WHO definitions of "safe" and "unsafe" abortion, which are legal definitions, not medical definitions. WHO defines "unsafe" abortions as abortions done in countries where abortion is illegal and "safe" abortions as abortions which meet legal (not medical) requirements in countries where abortion is legal. Using WHO definitions, two countries with identical maternal mortality (for example, a thousand deaths caused by misoprostol abortions) would report their identical mortality differently: Country "A" where abortion is not legal would be counted as having a thousand "unsafe" abortion deaths. Country "B" where abortion is legal would be counted as having ZERO unsafe abortion deaths. This dishonesty in WHO definitions allows UN funding agencies to pressure countries into legalizing abortion, under the guise of reducing maternal mortality.

Bill could direct women to Planned Parenthood and abortion services

American Life League warns that H.R. 211, currently being pushed through the Energy and Commerce Committee, could become a referral source for Planned Parenthood and abortion clinics, unless pro-lifers act. H.R. 211 sets up a nationwide 2-1-1 phone number (similar to 9-1-1) that would act as a referral for folks seeking social services and volunteer opportunities. In the hands of the Obama Administration – Planned Parenthood’s very own marketing and outreach team – this number could and will easily be used to “help” women find “comprehensive reproductive health care.”

ACTION: Call the Energy and Commerce Committee at (202) 225-2927 and tell them what you think.

Neb. abortion docs to file fetus' age with state - BusinessWeek

Neb. abortion docs to file fetus' age with state - BusinessWeek: Nebraska doctors will soon be required to report an aborted fetus' gestational age to the state as part of a first-of-its-kind law that will ban abortions starting at 20 weeks based on assertions that fetuses feel pain at that stage of development. The age information has so far been optional on reports doctors are required to file with the state detailing each abortion, and Nebraska's two abortion clinics don't volunteer it. That has made it difficult for state lawmakers -- and abortion opponents -- to get a clear picture of Nebraska's abortion business and the potential impact of state laws.

Opposition mounts to anti-family social agenda in the military

Liberty Counsel: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a key vote on the Defense Authorization Bill for tomorrow. Liberty Counsel is renewing its opposition to the bill, because it will repeal the law that prevents homosexuals from serving in the military and will allow abortions on military bases.

Liberty Counsel is urging its members to contact their Senators at their offices or by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to oppose the bill. The issues of abortion and homosexuals in the military do not belong in a military spending bill, just as the “hate crimes” provision did not belong in the Defense Authorization Bill last year.

Thought for the day, from Lori Smith

The most convincing translation of the Bible is the Bible translated into life. We want to be like Jesus!

There are very few crises in life; the greatest crisis is the surrender of the will."

Suspension fails to close dangerous abortion business

Operation Rescue: Abortionist Romeo Ferrer’s Gynecare Center never missed a day of business and continues to operate with help of the notorious abortionist Ghevont W. Wartanian. As dangerous as Ferrer was, it may be that he has replaced himself with an abortionist that poses an even greater threat to the public, based on Wartanian’s sordid history.

Wartanian incurred 18 malpractice suits over twenty years of practice, forcing settlement payouts in excess of $2 million. Maryland law required that any physician with three or more malpractice suits be referred to the Maryland Board of Physicians for discipline, but Wartanian had gotten off scot-free. The Baltimore Sun highlighted three disturbing malpractice cases that Wartanian settled out of court.

Planned Parenthood share of abortion market reaches all time high: Almost 5 million dead babies, and counting

STOPP calculates that at an average of $470 per abortion, Planned Parenthood affiliates brought in $152,283,760 in 2008 by way of abortion income. The 2008 abortion figure of 324,008 brings the total number of abortions committed by Planned Parenthood to 4,987,817.

AUL will be aggressively pursuing this resolution in other states in 2011.

India Abortions Dropping; 6M Abortions in 2008

India Abortions Dropping, New Government Figure Shows; 6M Abortions Done: A new governmental report shows the number of abortions in India is on the decline, but its says more than 6 million abortions are still done annually in the Asian nation. Family Welfare Statistics shows 6.41 million abortions done at 12,510 different institutions in 2008.

That's an improvement over the 7.25 million abortions estimated in 2005, the 7.21 million abortions in 2006, and the 6.82 million abortions in 2007.

The high abortion totals for Indiana regions include Uttar Pradesh, which saw 89,194 abortions in 2008 followed by the 63,875 abortions done in Tamil Nadu, according to figures from the Times of India. The Indian states of Orissa, Assam and Maharashtra rounded out the top five.

Documents reveal shocking details of Brigham's abortion practice

Operation Rescue has released an investigative report that contains shocking details of an elaborate late-term abortion scheme operated by the notorious abortionist Stephen Chase Brigham that landed one woman in the hospital and resulted in the license suspensions of three abortionists in two states.

The report is largely based on 302 pages of documents released to Operation Rescue by the State of New Jersey through an open records act request and includes redacted medical records and interviews with those involved in the botched 22 week abortion that was started in Voorhees, New Jersey, and continued at a secret abortion clinic in Elkton, Maryland.

The report reveals:

  • The two-state late-term abortion scheme violated NJ and MD laws
  • Discrepancies in the abortionist's story compared to hospital records and other testimony
  • The horrific ordeal endured by the abortion patient and her family
  • That abortions as late as 36 weeks were being started in NJ and ended in MD
  • How evasive abortionists described their suspicious "secret abortion clinic" to stunned emergency room staff
  • An encounter with the Elkton police where abortionist Brigham fled the scene to avoid questioning
  • Details of a police raid on Brigham's Elkton clinic where Utah abortionist Nicola Riley slipped away to warn Brigham's caravan of women evade police by diverting to a Baltimore clinic, where four late-term abortions were completed

City Officials Threaten Ultrasound Unit With Arrest. What Are They Afraid Of? | Pro-Life Corner: The city of Rockford, IL, has ordered a free mobile ultrasound unit to stop offering free ultrasounds to mothers and to leave Rockford, or face a warrant issued by the city legal department.

Rockford citizens had worked for weeks with the Rockford police department to find out all the requirements to have this fully licensed and accredited free clinic service for women come to Rockford. They were told it was in compliance with all regulations.

Yet on the morning of September 8, a pro-lifer noticed abortion clinic owner Wayne Webster talking and laughing with a Rockford police officer. The police officer accused this free mobile ultrasound unit of 'Soliciting' on a public street and ordered them to immediately leave Rockford.

Victor Gonzalez alleges that he saw millions in fraudulent overbilling to state and federal governments when he worked as Chief Financial Officer for Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles.

Gonzalez alleges that after he reported the problems internally he was fired. While Gonzalez was still working for PPLA the state of California launched audits of various Planned Parenthood affiliates, and uncovered more than $5.2 million in overbilling at a single affiliate based in San Diego. Gonzalez claims that Planned Parenthood lobbyists intervened to stop other audits that were still pending statewide.

'He operates in his own economic interests and not in the best interests of the women who seek his care,' Saporta said.

Battered Chinese Forced-Abortion Protester Released from Jail

Battered Chinese Forced-Abortion Protester Released from Jail: Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese lawyer who has withstood abuse and imprisonment after drawing attention to his country's coercive one-child policy, has been freed from prison - but has not escaped the government's iron fist. Chinese officials installed surveillance equipment around his home and village.

Guangcheng had been jailed for publishing stories of women's forced abortions and sterilizations at the hands of the government.

A family friend told the Washington Post that Chen's health had been seriously damaged by his stay in prison, where he endured beatings from other prisoners and suffered chronically severe diarrhea, and that he had wept when reunited with his family.

His lawyer said he hoped Chen's spirit was not broken by the experience. "He did so much good for the villagers. I hope he will be able to adhere to those original principles and beliefs he had."

New Jersey had been warned about negligent abortionist

In a July 23 letter, New Jersey Right to Life executive director Marie Tasy requested that New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow investigate Steven Chase Brigham's six New Jersey abortion facility following news of a crackdown on Brigham's four Pennsylvania clinics. In that state, Brigham's business came to an abrupt end after the Pennsylvania Department of Health discovered he had repeatedly employed unlicensed medical caregivers.

Paul Loriquet, a spokesperson with the New Jersey Attorney General's office, said Tasy's letter had been forwarded to the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners. The board, he says, was "about to respond" to the Pennsylvania allegations when the Maryland case arose, prompting the attorney general's cease and desist order. The abortionist's latest run-in with the law came one month later, August 25, when Maryland health officials ordered him to cease his frequent practice of initiating abortions in New Jersey, telling clients to drive to Elkton, Maryland, and completing the procedures there.

Brigham is not authorized to perform second or third-trimester abortions in New Jersey; however, neither is he licensed to practice medicine in Maryland. The scheme was discovered after one such procedure, performed on an 18-year-old, resulted in the laceration of her bowel and vagina and required the bleeding patient to be flown to Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore. A Hopkins doctor filed a complaint against the abortionist following the incident, which New Jersey's attorney general decried as constituting "gross negligence." LifeSiteNews

New Jersey Targets Abortionist Brigham

Abortions at Planned Parenthood Up 6 Percent

Planned Parenthood Report Shows Abortions Up 6 Percent, Adoptions Down: The new Planned Parenthood figures show it did 324,008 abortions in 2008 -- a 6.1 percent increase over the 305,310 abortions it did in 2007. The 2007 figure was itself a 5.3 percent increase over the 289,750 abortions Planned Parenthood did in 2006.

With approximately 1.2 million abortions done annually in the United States via surgical abortions or the dangerous RU 486 (mifepristone) abortion drug, Planned Parenthood has moved from doing 25 to 27 percent of all abortions at a time when Alan Guttmacher Institute, it's former research arm, have showed abortions at near-historic lows.

Editor: By designing the report to emphasize that abortions are "only" 3% of its business, PP seems to be trying to allay past criticism. LifeNews does a brilliant job of placing the figures in context.

Is your abortionist Board Certified?

Abortion Information & Referral Services - Muskegon, MI - Women's Medical Services: This abortion clinic boasts "the only Board Certified Medical Director in Southwest Michigan owner [sic] serving a private abortion clinic." Hmmmm. I wonder if that's true. Might be a good tidbit to drop into the minds of women seeking abortions.

The website goes on to advise: "If you call another abortion clinic, please ask if the Medical Director is Board Certified. Just training in OBGYN is not the same as being Board Certified." After explaining some of what that meant, it goes on to say, "This certification is not given to every doctor that performs abortions of [sic] completes a residency training program." Oh really? (Emphasis added.) Very interesting.

More explanation, and then, "Our medical director has high integrity, outstanding surgical skills, caring and is Board Certified." That's good to know about the person who will kill your baby.

The power of presence

This morning's email brought another happy report from the abortion clinic sidewalk. Yesterday, a woman left the clinic 30 minutes after entering, approached the sidewalk counselors, and said she had changed her mind. She "just couldn't do it."

What turned things around for her? She'd only had a brief conversation with the counselor before going in. It appears to have been a combination of her own misgivings and the presence of "watchmen on the wall" -- the location where sidewalk counselors stand is a retaining wall overlooking the abortion clinic parking lot, between it and the Omega House property -- as well as the prayers going up from a group of young people inside Omega House.

This young woman was impressed that strangers would pray for her, and that their prayers had been answered (see yesterday's Power of Prayer). Of course, if the sidewalk counselors and prayer warriors hadn't been there, she may have gone through with the abortion.

Or not. I was impressed by the idea that if they'd not been there and she'd changed her mind, no one but God would know about it. Not the sidewalk counselors, who go faithfully to the clinic in all sorts of weather and suffer discouraging responses from most women. Not the prayer warriors who, in faith, leave results to God and are most often left to wonder how their prayers are answered. Not you reading this. We all would have missed a reason to rejoice in God! I am so thankful the sidewalk counselors are there.

This incident got me thinking about the history of sidewalk counseling at that clinic. It began with picketing back in the 1980s. Sidewalk counseling occurred on a small scale at that time. One day while picketing, I noticed the house next door was for sale. I suggested to the director of the Alpha Women's Center that they buy it. A PCC right next door to the abortion clinic? How ideal!

Well, shortly after Alpha moved in, the abortion clinic moved out, to a location not far away. I was disheartened, but a picketing and sidewalk counseling ministry followed them, until the building the clinic was located in was put on the market and sold to a pro-life group!

The abortion clinic then moved back into it's old location, but Alpha Women's Center had moved out by that time. They still owned the house, which for a time held a maternity home (called Omega House). They allowed a now thriving cadre of sidewalk counselors to park in their lot and stand on their wall, which was better than trying to reach women from the sidewalk out front. Prayer warriors were allowed to gather inside the house, out of the cold. The building, though essentially empty, was preserved as a place for pro-life ministry, just in a mutated form.

My best thought, back in the 80s, had been that a PCC was what was needed as next-door competition to the clinic. But if a center had been there, would sidewalk counseling taken place, snatching women and babies from the jaws of death? Would it have been as effective? We don't know. But God's plan, so much different than mine, seems better in the long run.

The important thing is presence. Being there for the women, whether you're a sidewalk counselor or a PCC counselor. Thank you for being there.

The power of prayer

Sidewalk counselors remind us of one aspect of prayer's power that might be overlooked. The group here in Grand Rapids sends regular updates on what transpires at the abortion clinics: the sad conversations they have with desperate women who don't want to abort, the heartache they feel when their offers of help are rejected, and their joy when the truth is received.

Just this morning, Julie and Mary reported one such story. It's been ongoing. Those of us who read these missives from the sidewalk have followed their encounters with "A" over the past two weeks or so. It's been touch and go. But this morning, they reported a "save." "A" is no longer going through with her abortion plan!

What turned her around? Aside from the patient persistence of the sidewalk counselors, the free ultrasound and competent counsel at the pregnancy care center, assistance with food and other immediately needed items, help finding a job and car, promise of additional financial help as needed, one other factor held sway.

What was it? The promise that hundreds of people would be praying for her. "We told them that you would be praying, too," Julie and Mary wrote. "People are always so surprised that total strangers would care about their needs."

Are you praying for your clients? Are you sharing their stories in ways that protect their privacy but yet also enlist your prayer partners' intercession on their behalf? Are you able to tell your clients that many people will be praying for them as they make life-altering decisions?

Perhaps your clients don't pray themselves. They may not know how to pray, or understand what prayer is. Here's an opportunity to let them in on the power of prayer.

Abortion clinic will fight to re-open

Abortion clinic will fight to re-open - KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana |: For 9 years members of the Vita Pro-Life group have spent the 1st Saturday of every month praying by the Hope Medical Group For Women. but this Saturday is different than any other. 'We're celebrating this Saturday because the clinic has been closed thanks to a new law which the legislature for Louisiana has passed,' said Vita Coordinator Roxie Tabor.

That new law allows the head of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to quickly suspend the license of an abortion clinic if he decides there is an immediate health or safety threat. On Friday, the Hope Clinic in Shreveport became the 1st in the state to have to close its doors because of the law. A DHH report says the clinic failed to ensure a physician performed and documented a physical exam on each patient prior to a procedure. The report also says the clinic failed to follow several mandatory procedures involving anesthesia.

MO Planned Parenthood clinic temporarily halts abortions

Columbia Planned Parenthood clinic temporarily halts abortions - Columbia Missourian: Planned Parenthood’s Columbia clinic has temporarily suspended its abortion services due to “scheduling issues,” leaving a St. Louis center as the only functioning abortion clinic in the state.

The Columbia clinic halted its abortion services two weeks ago, said Peter Brownlie, president of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. Brownlie said he doesn’t expect the stoppage to be “lengthy,” but couldn’t say when Columbia’s abortion services will resume.

Brownlie said the temporary suspension of abortions in Columbia is unrelated to a new state law that imposes new requirements on doctors and clinics that provide abortions. He would not elaborate on the reason, except to say it is related to “scheduling.”

Editor: Hmmm. Scheduling. Could it be they can't find a doctor willing to do abortions? An even wilder speculation -- could this in any way be related to Brigham's problems in Maryland . . . his compadre that flies in from Utah also can't perform in MO?

Doctor's four-state abortion business under investigation

Three weeks ago, physician Steven Brigham led a car caravan of patients from his Voorhees abortion clinic to his facility in Elkton, Md. After one of the patients was critically injured during her surgery there, Brigham put the semiconscious, bleeding woman into the back of a rented Chevrolet Malibu and drove her to a nearby hospital emergency room rather than call an ambulance.

Those details are contained in documents issued over the last 10 days by the Maryland Board of Physicians and Elkton police. The two agencies have launched a wide-ranging investigation into Brigham's long-troubled abortion business, which he conducts in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

Brigham's four New Jersey clinics cannot provide abortions after the first trimester (14 weeks of pregnancy) because they do not meet state safety requirements for such risky outpatient surgeries. Brigham has for years performed the first phase of such abortions there - the insertion of absorbent rods that dilate the patient's cervix over a day or more - and sent them to a facility in another state for the surgery. New Jersey law doesn't address whether inserting dilators constitutes abortion.

Maryland regulators are investigating not only Brigham, but also two physicians he employed. On Tuesday, the board suspended the Maryland license of George Shepard Jr., a Delaware obstetrician-gynecologist hired in 2009 as a part-time medical director of Brigham's four Maryland clinics. The board has charged Shepard with unprofessional conduct and with helping Brigham flout credentialing requirements. Also on Tuesday, the Maryland board suspended the license it granted less than two months ago to Nicola I. Riley, a family physician who in late July began flying "from her home in Utah every other week to Maryland to perform abortions." It was Riley who mishandled the abortion on Aug. 13.

On Aug. 12, an 18-year-old woman, 21 weeks pregnant, signed abortion consent forms at Brigham's Voorhees facility, at 1 Alpha Ave. Brigham then inserted the absorbent rods that widen the cervix. On Aug. 13, the patient returned to the Voorhees clinic, with "the understanding that she would be provided transportation to Philadelphia" for the surgical phase of the abortion. Instead, "Dr. Brigham . . . instructed [her] and the other women who were scheduled to complete abortions to form a line of cars and follow the lead car to a location where the abortion would be performed."

In Elkton, Riley gave the patient anesthesia under Brigham's direction and began the surgery, but cut through the patient's uterus into the bowel and vagina.

Riley informed the patient's mother and boyfriend of the complications, but refused to call for an ambulance. Riley "originally contemplated taking [the patient] by wheelchair to the hospital, which was about two blocks away." Brigham drove Riley and the patient to the hospital, where the two abortion doctors dodged questions "about who they were, what had happened, and from where they had come."

The patient's injuries were so complex that she had to be flown by helicopter to Johns Hopkins Hospital while Riley "returned to the Elkton office . . . to perform another abortion."

A few days later, the patient complained to the Elkton police; they raided the clinic on Aug. 17, looking for the patient's medical record. Although that couldn't be found, police discovered frozen aborted fetuses and medical-waste records showing fetal ages up to 36 weeks. (A pregnancy is considered full-term at 38 weeks.) Philly.com

The role of fetal microchimerism in autoimmune disease

The role of fetal microchimerism in autoimmune disease: Fetal microchimerism occurs in normal human reproduction and is a relatively new discovery in biology. Recent data in the scientific and medical literature indicates that some of the autoimmune diseases that show a predilection for women in their child-bearing years and beyond are linked to fetal microchimerism from previous pregnancies. The pathological role of fetal microchimeric progenitor immature T cells in autoimmune disease in women is explored. Fetal microchimerism is increased in women who had a termination of pregnancy and may be associated with the development of autoimmune disease later on in life. Furthermore, the consistently rising incidence of autoimmune diseases in women over the past four decades may be attributed to the increase in the utilization of abortion.
