The point is this: United Way refers these young girls to PPWI for treatment or 'services.' PP initiated a concerted effort about 5 years ago to merge affiliates bringing in less than $2 million a year with other affiliates to get to a combined income of over $8 million, this to establish homogenous affiliates so that decisions would be more uniform across the organization.

SD law brings crisis pregnancy centers

S.D. law brings crisis pregnancy centers - Boston.com: The small sign outside the Alpha Center in Sioux Falls lists a roster of available services: “Free pregnancy tests, abortion information, STD testing.’’ Inside women can get a free ultrasound and hear about birth programs. But if you’re a woman looking for help finding a legal abortion, you’ve come to the wrong place. Nowhere within this crisis pregnancy center will a visitor find help getting an abortion, in part because a new state law would make such referrals illegal.

The center, which says its goal is to counsel and educate pregnant women, is one of three statewide that have signed up so far to be a required stop for those seeking an abortion if South Dakota’s new abortion law survives legal challenges.

Court Affirms Human Life Begins at Conception in Indiana Case

Court Affirms Human Life Begins at Conception in Indiana Case | LifeNews.com: The state of Indiana may have lost the most recent battle in what will be a lengthy lawsuit concerning its ability to de-fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business, but two pro-life legal groups say there is a silver lining.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt granted Planned Parenthood’s request for a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit filed after Republican Governor Mitch Daniels signed the law in May. Judge Pratt also blocked a portion of the law requiring abortion practitioners to tell women considering an abortion that their unborn child will feel pain as early as 20 weeks into pregnancy. However, she rejected Planned Parenthood’s request that a part of the law be blocked that women be told before an abortion that “human physical life begins when a human ovum is fertilized by a human sperm.”

Guttmacher’s Research on Unintended Pregnancies

Guttmacher’s Research on Unintended Pregnancies - By Michael J. New - The Corner - National Review Online: Last month the Guttmacher Institute promoted two studies that calculate the cost of unintended pregnancies. What makes this research agenda challenging is that it is difficult to obtain a precise figure for the percentage of pregnancies that are unintended.

Pregnancies can come with varying levels of “wantedness,” and it may be too simplistic to categorize pregnancies as either “intended” or “unintended.” That said, both studies seem fairly well done. Both conclude that unintended pregnancies cost taxpayers anywhere from $9 billion to $12 billion a year. However, when analyzing a Guttmacher study, their recommendations are usually more problematic than their methodology.

Travailing with our clients

Colleen Tronson of Metro Women's Center in Crystal, MN, reflects on how hard it is to wait to see God work in clients' lives:
I have found myself begging the Lord for His continuing wisdom as to how to help our clients, many of whom we have worked with for years. I have been asking Him to please lead our volunteers and myself to the Biblical principles that will cause that "AH-HA" moment for our clients. We strive to use the Word to bring about change in the lives of these dear ones, and the exciting part of this struggle is that as we study, we are changed and grow in our faith. Imagine that! We recognize that it is our job to bring the individual to the Word, and then it is their choice to respond or not; however, it is the waiting that makes us (me) crazy!

As I have been pondering this process lately, the word that keeps coming to my mind is "travail." Webster says travail is either a noun meaning "painful or laborious effort" or a verb meaning "to engage in painful or laborious effort." The Word speaks of travail in Galatians 4:19-20 where Paul says, "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ is formed in you." Matthew Henry's commentary says in part that Paul is expressing affection and concern for the welfare of the Galatians. Not a passing concern but a "sincere concern for their truest advantage." They thought he was their enemy, but he tries to reassure them that "he had the bowels of a parent towards them." He expresses his earnest thoughts for them not only physically but spiritually using the travailing (birthing) woman idea. He was in pain for them that Christ might be formed in them, so they would become real Christians indeed, and grow in their faith.

There are many travailing moments in this ministry, whether it is the travail over making the decision to have the baby or abort; to parent or make an adoption plan; to marry or single parent; to choose abstinence or continue with sexual activity; to choose Christ or reject Him; to obey the Word or not. Through it all I know that GOD's WORD WILL NOT RETURN VOID, and that is where I can rest.

God continues to give us evidence of this truth, through little "splashes of joy." This week one of our volunteers was able to pray with a woman to receive the Lord; a client worked through trusting God during a time of grieving; and we even saw glimmers of change in the life of another woman. YIPEEEE! We even saw the Lord provide a great donation of maternity clothing this week -- we had been running low and the items were really cute!

We are even in travail as we move forward with plans for the Amazing Grace Home. Last Saturday, we made an offer on a home, but we were outbid. We worked hard (labored) through the process and grew as a team, but the Lord has another plan for us. So, we will keep looking and praying.

Indiana: Two Hospital Doctors Stop Doing Abortions After Law | LifeNews.com: Doctors at Indiana University and Wishard Hospital have decided to stop doing as many as 70 abortions annually thanks to the state law Governor Mitch Daniels signed de-funding Planned Parenthood.

While the bill exempted hospitals, some say it did not exempt the abortion practitioners at the hospitals.

The Israeli abortion committees' process of decision making

The Israeli abortion committees' process of decision making: an ethical analysis -- Rimon-Zarfaty and Jotkowitz -- Journal of Medical Ethics: The findings reveal a paradoxical picture: on the one hand, committee members hold liberal perceptions and in practice abortion requests are very seldom rejected. On the other hand, the Israeli abortion law and practice of abortion committees is still problematical from liberal and feminist rights perspectives. This paradox is discussed further by reflecting upon the relevant theory as well as the Israeli context. The paper concludes by suggesting that within the specific Israeli sociopolitical climate the requirement for committee approval of what should be a private decision might be necessary in order to placate religious or other opposition to abortion.

Nash reiterated, “This is the worst year ever,” reminding the audience that it isn’t over, because there are still states with open sessions and pro-life bills in play, namely Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The 2nd part of Nash’s report was on the uptick of family planning funding restrictions.

Thinking God will run out of welcome home banners

Thinking God will run out of welcome home banners. | Stuff Christians Like – Jon Acuff: I don’t understand forgiveness, and it’s always depressing to me when I read a book that tells me that’s the first step of the Christian walk, believing that God forgives you. If I can’t get past that first step, then the rest of it, all the rest of it, remains completely closed to me.

It’s not that I think I don’t need forgiveness. I just don’t understand how it’s possible.

If I can’t earn it, then it’s out of my control and I’m powerless.

Report: Illinois Clinics Hid Six Abortion Deaths, 4,000 Injuries | LifeNews.com: The Chicago Tribune has released the details of a new investigative report revealing the umber of abortions in the state has been massively underreported. Those numbers include six women who have died from botched abortions and 4,000 who were injured.

Congressional Hearings Needed on Abortion

Congressional Hearings Needed on How Abortion Kills, Hurts Women | LifeNews.com: In the U.S., there are two sources of data on abortion deaths and complications, both equally unreliable: the Centers for Disease Control and the Alan Guttmacher Institute. Both rely on voluntary (not mandatory) reporting. Neither has any reliable mechanism for double-checking the accuracy of the submitted information. Given the currently available data, even the most basic questions about abortions cannot be reliably answered, including:
  • How many abortions are done annually in the United States?
  • What are the immediate and long-term risks from abortion?
  • How many women die from surgical and Mifeprex abortions?
  • How many women suffer damage to their reproductive organs after abortion?
  • How many women are hospitalized after botched abortions?
  • How many women commit suicide after abortion?
  • How many women suffer major depression after abortion?
  • How many women experience preterm birth in their next pregnancy because of damage done during the abortion of their last child?
Women need this kind of basic medical information before they make a decision to abort. And it is the responsibility of Congress to make sure that the agencies responsible for public health collect the information that women have a right to know.

The abortion industry's war on choice

SMITH: The abortion industry's war on choice - Washington Times: There is a new war on choice in this country, and the leaders are none other than the captains of the abortion industry. Their target: pregnancy care centers. Their technique: Brand the centers with a 'scarlet letter' and force them to advertise abortion. Their goal: disparage the centers and drive women to abortion clinics.

It's no wonder. Pregnancy care centers - and the compassionate and nonjudgmental services they offer - undercut the abortion industry's bottom line. If women hear the truth about abortion and understand that they truly have a life-affirming choice, the abortion industry's profits will decrease.

How Ultrasound Changed the Human Sex Ratio

The technology that ultimately became the dominant method of sex selection around the world began as a tool for navigation. . . . To the 1960s public the technology looked positively futuristic. Around the time pregnancy became a choice rather than an inevitability and the business of having children became about more than generating labor for the farm, we began seeking ways to bond with our babies before birth. An image on which to pin parental hopes made that task a whole lot easier, and so it was a breakthrough to have a preview, however muddled, of the baby growing inside a mother’s uterus. . . .

But public fascination also provided a window for criticism, and ultrasound elicited substantial ethical deliberation. Some critics feared overly powerful scientists. Feminists pushing for abortion rights fretted, justifiably, that the machine humanized the fetus. Others worried the new reproductive technology would be exploited by governments intent on manipulating their populations; the Nazis, after all, had screened newlyweds for genetic diseases in their eugenics program. What if the power to create "superbabies" fell into the hands of an evil dictator? But none of these critiques came close to identifying what turned out to be ultrasound’s most pernicious threat. In hindsight, 1960s Americans worried about everything except the possibility that average parents, emboldened by the new knowledge technology brought them, might make small, seemingly innocuous choices—and that those choices, taken together, would add up to disaster.

"Pro-Life" Movie Promotes Violence

"Pro-Life" Movie "Gates of Hell" Promotes Violence, Not Helpful | LifeNews.com: A producer by the name of Molotov (can’t make this stuff up) has made a film about a Black terrorist group, called Zulu 9, that goes after abortionists for 40 years of Black genocide. The movie is called, The Gates of Hell. Once again, Black Americans are portrayed as gangster thugs whose only depth is how much their ammo clip can hold in their automatic weapons. Blacks are consistently portrayed as hopelessly prone to violence as the only solution to what ails them. This movie is vile and disgusting.

Editor: While I agree with the reviewer's premise, I find it interesting he falls into the same mistake he's accusing the movie-maker of making. While complaining the movie stereotypes black men as gangsters, he fears the movie will incite young black men to violence. Are they gangsters after all? And then he uses a very unfortunate metaphor in his last paragraph, comparing the hoped for failure of this movie with a baby's crib-death. We should rightly discern, but we should be also discerning about how we comment.

Why is the abortion rate up amongst the poor?

Why is the abortion rate up amongst the poor, but down everywhere else? | LifeSiteNews.com: Even though the abortion rate has declined for most demographic groups, the largest decline has taken place among African-American women. The abortion rate for minors also continued to fall dramatically, declining by 22 percent between 2000 and 2008. The abortion rate among married women is dramatically less than the abortion rate for women who either cohabit or have never been married. Finally, women with no religious affiliation have a higher abortion rate than those who identify with some religion.

The one finding that has received considerable media attention is that between 2000 and 2008, the abortion rate increased substantially among women below the poverty line. Could the increase in federal funds to Planned Parenthood be responsible?
