Birth control or abortifacient? ACOG president plays with words

Letter: Anti-abortion take on birth control misleading – USATODAY.com: In his attempt to clear up a misuse of terminology, James N. Martin Jr., president; American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, made the case that many pro-lifers have been making for years: "All contraceptives, including these FDA-approved methods, prevent ovulation, fertilization and/or implantation." But he also muddied the water by explaining, "Norplant, Depo Provera and the intrauterine device do not function as abortifacients. . . . The definition of contraception is to prevent pregnancy, which occurs at implantation. RU-486 is not considered birth control. This is a medication used to cause an abortion once pregnancy has begun."
