The worst way to build a board

Mike Fichter confesses he used to end Right to Life meetings like this: “We are always looking for more board members. If you would like to be on board, we sure would like to have you.” Then he'd give the details of the next board meeting. "Looking back on those days, it’s a wonder that I didn’t cause more organizational damage than I did." Why would anyone want to extend such an invitation to complete strangers? It’s the worst way in the world to build a board of directors. Well meaning, but flirting with disaster nonetheless.

Service on your board of directors is a privilege and an honor not to be extended lightly. In fact, the opportunity should never be extended unless a candidate has been thoroughly vetted, meets a leadership need, is approved by the current board in advance, and agrees to meet the established expectations for board members.
